Hassan II Mosque is the largest in the country and the 7th in the world. It offers a wonderful view of the Atlantic Ocean and is built partly on land and ocean. Thus, two giant dams were built to protect the building from the erosive action of the waves.

Hassan II Mosque is a must see if you are in Casablanca. It is enormous and can fit tens of thousands of people. It is beautiful both inside and out and is made almost exclusively out of materials sourced from different parts of Morocco. If you drive down the coast a little more, you can get a beautiful photo of the mosque sitting over the water. They have guided tours that I believe run on the hour.

The great Hassan II Mosque was commissioned by its namesake, King Hassan II, in part to provide Casablanca with a single landmark monument. Designed by French architect Michel Pinseau, construction of the Hassan II Mosque began in July 1986 on land reclaimed (without compensation to the former residents) from a run-down area near the sea. It was completed in 1993 after great expense and artistic labor, and the result is one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world. Its gleaming newness and tremendous wealth is a stark contrast against the rest of Casablanca.

This is the only mosque non-Muslims can visit in Morocco. (Phew--that lightens the sightseeing burden!) But it's a doozy. I've been in a lot of mosques, and this one is probably the most ridiculously glitzy and huge I've ever seen. You can enter only on a guided tour, where they point out all the vastly huge facilities and over-the-top decoration, and of course the fact that you can see the Atlantic Ocean through the glass floor. Vegas, baby.

The pride of Casablanca, it was really the only thing I enjoyed seeing. It is an enormous and powerful structure sitting half on land and half over the sea! Even without being able to understand the immense importance it stands for religious reasons, the construction and design of the mosque alone is enough for anyone to appreciate! The grounds are beautiful and it is one of the few mosques in morocco where non-Muslims are welcomed inside.

This mosque is the second largest in the world. Even the carpet & the chandeliers inside are amazing!

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is one of the most intricately decorated and beautiful religious sites I have ever seen. Listed as the 7th largest mosque in the world the Hassan II was designed to hold over 100,000 people inside and out. Not only is this site a great place to visit to view it's distinctly Moorish artistic and architectural qualities, but also because it is one of the few mosques open to the public. I recommend planning your visit around prayer times so that you are less likely to disturb practitioners, and the crowds will be much smaller.

Make sure you go with a guide at the proper time so the mosque is not closed when you get there
