That has definitely been my worst vacation in the world, because mud gets all in your ears, butt, face, and don't even get me started with hair! It took almost a week to wash out! Ugh! It is definitely something I would never recommend. Literally my favorite part of it was climbing the stairs, and I even tripped! >:(

This mud volcano is just north of Cartagena. Swimming in the grey liquid is supposed to be good for your skin and will definitely make you look like an alíen. Go early in the day to avoid a massive crowd.

Definitely my highlight of the trip! Long line, but interesting experience of being covered in mud. My tour included a nice lunch by the beach where you could finish getting the mud off

According to myth, El Volcan Totumo was once an active volcano, but when a priest sprinkled holy water over it, it started oozing mud instead of fire. The volcano itself is not very large, and looks a bit like a giant termite mound. You walk up the wooden stairs and down into a pit of warm, goopy mud. It's so buoyant that you can't sink or even swim properly, but just sort of float around. Overall, it's one of the weirdest things I've ever experienced.

Totumo is definitely a tourist spot, and you have to buy into the fact that the locals run the show. They help you in, massage you a bit, take photos of you with your camera, and then steer you over to make room for the next guy. After you've soaked for awhile, they help you out and then direct you to the nearby lagoon, where local women help wash off all the mud. Bring small bills to tip everyone after it's all over. There are also restaurants and bars in the area in case you want to relax with some coconut water before heading back.

Key tip: Go before 10am to beat the tourist buses that leave Cartagena at 9am. The volcano is not very large, and it can get very full when a crowd arrives. A taxi ride from the center of Cartagena takes about half an hour.

Totumo Volcano is a small volcano that shoots out mud in a village outside of Cartagena, so it's a popular place for tourists to climb up the steep steps and partake in a mud bath massage. In theory, it sounds strange. You step in the mud, and the mud feels oddly cool against your skin. The local villagers will give you a massage, and while I'm sure they're not licensed or trained, their massage techniques are funny and entertaining.
