Get out of the old city of Cartagena to see the grittier Getsmani. You'll find tons of laidback restaurants, bars and hostels in this neighborhood that mostly cater to a younger clientele, although anyone is welcome here. On a particular Friday night, it seemed like all of the city's youth was gathered at the Plaza de Santisma Trinidad to drink, dance and be merry.

Getsemani is the more urban area of Cartagena and a great place to get an apartment if you want a safer place to stay. It has all the things you would find in an urban community. Worth checking out too if you want to see some decent graffiti art that Colombia is known for (but better stuff in Bogota).

Cool upcoming neighborhood right outside the walled city. While somewhat gritty, it has a lot of personality because its where the locals still live and they like their Street Art...Lots of very good restaurants and cool bars

Gethsemane, steps from the walled area, keeps all the charm of the typical traditional neighborhood of Cartagena workers. It is full of urban protest art and against gentrification but at the same time endow it with color and joy (moreover, there is a tour exclusively to understand the urban art of the neighborhood). It has become very fashionable among backpackers and now you will find many hostels, bars, restaurants and nightclubs. For me, it is a must.

Caracas

You have to get away from the old town, walk some streets full of colors and get to Gethsemane: the most bohemian neighborhood of Cartagena. The vibration that is lived here is unique; It is a place full of bars, hostels, good music. Here coincide travelers from many places in the world that go around among the art that is seen in almost all its walls. It is very much worth walking and staying here.
