Description
This oddly shaped, 670 meter high rock formation that sits prominently on the Cape Town skyline offers one of the best hikes in town and some of the most awesome views of the city and Table Mountain. ... Read more
The hike is moderate in difficulty and should only take you about an hour or two. It should be noted that there are some ladders and short climbs to tackle close to the top which may prove difficult for some.

While I was in Cape Town unfortunately the trail was closed for the yearly maintenance, so I could only admire from the bottom. A popular spot for sundowners

One of the nicest hikes that can be done independently in Cape Town is that to Lion's Head. From there, there are fantastic views of Table Mountain. The hike is mostly easy, save for a short bit where you need to pay a bit of attention. Make sure to only go if the weather conditions are perfect!

The intense turquoise waters here will have you whipping out the camera over and over. The beach is well looked after and maintained and the waters are chilly, but lovely to swim in.

It's free. The views are awe inspiring. The climb is vertical and long. Some portions require flexibility and agility to use the ladders and staples. There are treks with chains to secure you on some of the narrow ledges. Go early morning or late to avoid the heat of Summer. I failed to recognize the heat of the summer sun.

It was a not too hard hiking, I did 2 hours up and 1.5 hours down. The sunset was amazing, but the way back got a little difficult because of the dark. After all ,total worth!!!

Great views and a relatively easy hike that one can complete in roughly 1hr30. Wear good shoes and I recommend that you take a jacket no matter the weather.

This famous peak lies between Table Mountain and Signal Hill. It is popular with hikers and paragliders. Oh, and the views from up here are as majestic as the peak itself.

Table Mountain may be the iconic symbol of Cape Town, but you can't miss Lion's Head, either. Hike the rock formation for almost-as-beautiful views.

tried to go up table mountain but the line was 2 hours long, hiked Lion's head instead and I personally believe that the view couldnt be better at table. You get a 360 view of the whole cape... A must go

I'm always getting harassed to climb up Lion's Head whenever I'm in Cape Town and the task always seems so daunting. I've never regretted it though. It's an awesome hike that looks more difficult than it really is. And, while you might complain about the elevation gain in the first half of the hike, all will be forgotten when you get to the top and check out the awesome view of Cape Town, Table Mountain, and beyond.

Impressive companion to Table Mountain. Security on the slopes has improved, but best to hike with a partner. Amazing views.

Cape town is amazing for hikes and caving, Lion's head is one of the favoured destinations for such adventures.

I walk up / run up Lion's Head some three times a week to keep in shape. It is awesome, due the fact that the scenery changes ever 20 steps or so. It is something I won't get tired of. Apart from using Lion's Head as my personal gym, I love taking visitors up because it gives them a good sense about Cape Town's beauty.
Once a year, I wake up at the crack of dawn for a sunrise hike. Climbing Lion's head in the dark, with thousands of lights at your feet and the city still asleep, is magical.
I tend to avoid the moon climb (which has turned into a genuine Cape Town tradition), simply because it gets so hectically busy.
Climbing Lion's Head, at a normal pace, will take you some 45 minutes to an hour (depending on your level of fitness and on how often you stop to take pictures). Down takes about 30 minutes.

Hiking Lion's Head on a warm, clear evening with a picnic and some wine is the perfect way to end a day in Cape Town.

Not for the unfit or fainthearted (there are ladders and rocky slopes to scramble up at the top), and definitely not to be tackled in anything but the very best weather, the view from the top is nonetheless stunning. Way more satisfying than Table Mountain, as you'll have gotten to the top under your own steam. Bring plenty of water and watch the weather closely!
