Description
There is no question that the 3,000 African penguins who hang out here own this piece of Simon’s Town; you just get to visit. Walkways along this seashore keep you from disturbing the nesting sites ... Read more
but you still get very close to these bold and captivating birds. Few things are more adorable than a penguin. A whole colony of them can overwhelm the brain’s cuteness receptor but Boulder’s Beach is worth the risk.

Nestled in sheltered coves, Boulders has a thriving colony of African Penguins. Although set in a residential area, it is one of the few sites that you can observe penguins at a close range wandering freely in a protected natural area. Make sure to explore the other beaches just after the main area where the penguins stay mostly. They are beautiful and more protected from the wind, you can even sunbathe and swim on a sunny day!

Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town has a lot going for it: the ancient granite boulders protect it from the wind and large waves, making it an ideal swimming spot for kids. Because it falls under the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area, the beach is always clean and safe, and it is rarely crowded. Sure, this comes at the cost of a small conservation fee, but who wouldn’t be willing to part ways with R65 for a day in this paradise?

Did I mention the penguins? The soft white sand and warm(ish) waters are not the only reasons why 60 000 visitors a year make their way along the coast, past Simon’s Town, to Boulders Beach. The local inhabitants – and I’m talking about the little tuxedoed chaps here – know how to pull the crowds.

African Penguins – formerly known as jackass penguins because of their distinctive braying – are the only penguins found on the continent. Colonies can be found from southern Namibia all the way around the South African coast to Port Elizabeth; however, few places offer as remarkable a viewing point as Boulders Beach.

Penguins on a beach you can get close to?! We could have sat on the and watched the cuteness for hours. Bring a towel, don your bathing suit and head out to hang with the Penguins!

Before I came to here, I was thinking I might see around 100 penguins. But, the truth is there are more then 200 penguins on the beach. They are so adorable. Although it took us more then one hour from cape town to simon's town by train, it's worth to come here and say hello to these cuties.

This white-sand beach is surrounded by granite boulders. But no one notices the beach due to the colony of penguins that live here. Thousands of penguins! Wooden walkways keep people away from them, though there are plenty of photo opportunities. A major (read: crowded) attraction, but one that's hard to pass up.

Great place to visit, hang out on the beach with the penguins.
Spot of a advice here. Most tourists will actually end up in an area where you cannot get among them. If you find yourself next to a new looking tourist information building you are in the wrong place. You can still see penguins here in fact many more. But you will be restricted to walking above them on a wooden walkway above the rocks where the penguins nest.

No problem, once you have had a good look, head south on the wooden path and you will get to another small booth, here you can come down to the actual beach, it's only a 2 min walk or so. Here you can get into the water and here the penguins will be right next to you.

A life changing experience... I was swimming 2 feet from them and there were hundreds. You climb around the rocks and you can see them if timid of the water.

Boulders Beach isn't far from the city of Cape Town and is definitely worth the little side trip. I don't know anyone who doesn't like penguins but you don't often come across people who have had the chance to hang out with them in the wild. Over 3000 black-footed penguins have made this beach their home and they're nice enough to let you visit. You get really close to the little creatures and it is great fun just to watch them doing all their penguin things. The photo opportunities are excellent.

Afterwards, there are lots of great seafood restaurants in the area and fun shops to explore along the waterfront of Simonstown.

Jackass penguins are great fun for adults and kids alike. Probably v crowded in the high season but fine in July.

I love jackass penguins, they seriously rule! And in South Africa - or Africa period for that matter, this is where to see them. Beautifully ironic juxtaposition with the Cape Town beaches, sun, sand, surf and sharks. Couldn't be more surreal, or more real South Africa. A great little spot.

Boulders Beach is a convenient and worthwhile stopping point on the road to the Cape of Good Hope. For those of us used to seeing Emperor Penguins in movies and documentaries these African Penguins look somewhat out of place on sandy beaches and among plants growing some distance from the water. Nevertheless, they are fun to watch, if you can elbow your way through the mass of tourists trying to do the same thing.
