Top Cape Town hotels by interest

Cape Town is where Europe meets Africa. With a seriously Mediterranean vibe, this South African city is laid back yet cosmopolitan: a real colourful and creative melting pot. These cultural combos have resulted in Cape Town winning the title of World Design Capital 2014, and also mean you’re never far from a good meal or some excellent live music while exploring the city streets.

There’s a great range of accommodation to be found in Cape Town. Award winning boutique hotels for those who like a bit of luxury, backpacker hostels for those who like to do things on a budget, and everything in between can be found in the city centre and surrounding suburbs.

Cape Town’s mild weather makes it a great spot for a city break at any time of year. The daily highs in summer (Dec-Feb) rarely reach above 26 °C, while the winter months (Jun-Aug) don’t tend to drop much below 8°C: although they can be quite wet.

There’s no shortage of things to do during a trip to Cape Town. If you’re feeling adventurous you can go swimming with sharks, or catch a cable car to the top of the iconic Table Mountain. From the top you get an excellent view down to the City Bowl (Cape Town’s central business district) and some companies offer the opportunity to abseil the 112 metres back down to sea level.

Party animals will find plenty to keep themselves occupied on Long Street, Cape Town’s most notorious nightlife hotspot. Bars, clubs, and restaurants galore can be found here, with something to suit all tastes: from gay bars to rock clubs, to underground raves and hipster hangouts. Cape Town also has a few other party enclaves, with promising clubs springing up along the V&A Waterfront and celebrity hangouts aplenty along Camps Bay.

If the weather’s bad, never fear: Cape Town has more than its fair share of interesting museums. The National Gallery does a great line in African art, the South African Museum hosts over a million different taxidermy animal and plant specimens, while the District Six Museum offers a stark insight into South Africa’s apartheid period. Don’t forget a trip to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in a maximum security prison before going on to lead the country.

Hotels in Cape Town make a great base for exploring the surrounding Western Cape, one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa. Some of the country’s most famous wine lands are within striking distance: it’s possible to reach Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek within an hour.

If you’re visiting Cape Town in spring (Sep-Nov), make a point of visiting the Cape Floral Region. The UNESCO World Heritage Site tends to be fairly barren throughout the year, but when spring arrives the wildflowers come with it. The whole area becomes blanketed in colourful and unique blossoms, a sight that has to be seen to be believed.
