I will always associate the Oasis Hotels & Resorts with the threat “Do you ever want to see your families again?”

Imagine going on vacation and returning to your room after a day at the pool to find a small crack in your door had grown to the point your door is now in splinters. Now imagine requesting a new room due to the broken door, being told that it was your fault it broke, that you owe $623 USD cash on the spot or you will go to jail, and the manager’s response [manager for Oasis Cancun] to any rebuttal being “you are lying to me”. Now imagine another manager [also a manager for Oasis Cancun], accompanied by police officers, asking your party the questions “Do you have families? Do you ever want to see them again?” even after paying the $623 USD in cash, leaving your party with barely enough cash left to pay for a taxi to the airport. This happened to us. For the rest of our stay, the resort assigned security guards to follow us around and even forced us to sign a contract stating we would not disturb any other guests. This instilled the fear for the duration of our stay that if we were simply eating dinner and accidentally bumped into someone, who might subsequently drop a drink, we would be arrested on the spot. This incident essentially turned the resort into an ocean-front prison for the remaining duration our stay, causing us to count down the hours until our departure from our room.

In addition to this horrific experience, the entire resort was falling apart, the pool was disgustingly dirty, and even the local bus drivers were more polite than the employees.

I strongly recommend you avoid Oasis Hotels & Resorts like your life depends on it-because it does.

Ah the memories of spring break in the nineties... am I dating myself?
I've half a mind to go back in March!! Super fun and americanized with awesome parties. I've been 3 times, one of my favorites!

The Gran Melia in Cancun is a little like being Pearl Jam in rock and roll, clearly in the upper echelon but are they the best? That’s really a matter of personal taste and very subjective. That being said this place is stunning. The building was constructed to replicate a pyramid, which was a clever use of form drawing from the natural environs of this region of Mexico. The Mayan theme did not stop there. When stepping into the Gran Melia there is so much indoor vegetative growth that a microclimate has been created, it may be more humid inside the hotel than out! Of course, the rooms are air-conditioned and offer a nice respite from the heat.

Everything about the Melia evokes a sense of Zen like tranquility. The fragrant air, the indoor jungle and the attentive staff all pull together to create a wonderful and relaxing oasis. Being a big kid at heart, and being American, I was fascinated and found endless amusement from the bidet. The only downer, and certainly not unique to the Melia, were the contractors pushing there tour packages in the lobby.

Walking into the enormous lobby my jaw dropped a bit at the site of the atrium beyond the check in area. I saw what looked like a jungle opening up to a huge resort full of exciting things! There was mellow music softly playing throughout the entrance and there was such a relaxing vibe that I had to pause, poor myself a glass of the complimentary ice cold mango juice and remind myself that I was at a resort, and not a spa. The staff was totally welcoming and just as nice as the view and ambiance. All of the rooms are surrounded around an atrium full of water features with ivy draping down from the railing at the top floor from what seemed like hundreds of feet above. The room was very comfortable with beautiful marble floors throughout, every amenity you could ask for, and much more!

The Gran Melia Cancun is the best laid out, most relaxing hotel in which I have ever stayed with georgeous views inside as well as out. The glistening sand and turquoise Gulf water can be seen for miles. The main pyramid (3 in all) is open with philodendron hanging from the top floor balcony all the way down to the lobby floor. There are fica trees, gigantic candles, pergolas, massage huts, running waters, a gym, a spa, anything your heart desires. I hope to return one day!
