Located in downtown Cancun, Hotel Rey del Caribe is a quiet property with plain but very comfortable rooms, many with kitchenettes. The common areas are very appealing--lush tropical gardens with plenty of hammocks, a nice pool, and an outdoor eating area with gorgeous wood floors (no shoes allowed). The hotel is eco-friendly too, employing solar heating, rainwater collection, and composting. Best of all, the Zona Hotelera's beaches are just a 10-minute bus ride away. (And if you're travelling by bus within Mexico--the long distance bus station is just two blocks away.)

New YORK!

There are other hotels I like in Cancun a bit more, but this place is great if you're in Cancun for an overnight, but you still wish you were in Tulum. The atmosphere inside is all chilled-out and green (in all senses), and the owners are a couple of old-school Mexican hippie types. Breakfast is whole-grainy and there's often a yoga class. The rooms themselves are a little generic (you're in Cancun--nothing is oozing atmosphere), but that doesn't matter too much. It's also an easy walk to the bus station.

Los Osos

The El Rey de Caribe is located in the heart of downtown Cancun and while they classify themselves as a hotel, they have rates more likened to a hostel. When we arrived at El Rey they were undergoing some pretty serious renovation up front, it’s always nice to see a business continuing to improve itself. Another significant change is they seem to be going for a more environmentally friendly marketing angle, calling themelves an “Eco Hotel”. They are reducing their footprint by utilizing solar water heaters and adhere to a pretty strict policy of reuse, recycle and compost.

The rooms are pretty small and spartan, but the ambiance was anything but. There was a cafe on site that serves guests breakfast, but being so centrally located travelers will have no trouble finding food. The lady at the front desk told us that El Rey was known as “El Verde Hotel del Cancun” and with a sign saying, “Some rooms are equipped with suitable technology in composing toilets,” who are we to disagree?

Atascadero

This downtown motel was unique and quaint. The entrance has a garden-like setting in the lobby and as we walked through the property I was sweating up a storm. On a hot day, without air conditioning except for in the rooms I wasn’t getting the relief I look for when finally making it to my destination. The friendly employee showed us around and even pointed out the little cottage house in the middle of the property near the small, simple pool that apparently belongs to the owners. I guess they like to live right in the center of things! The place was simple, and even had a little free standing hot tub that was just placed on a deck near the pool. With a 700 pesos a night quote, I thought that was a little much for this place and location.
