Local from Buenos Aires

Caveat: El Ateneo Grand Splendid CAN get pricey if you plan on buying a lot of books, or eating a big meal at the café. However, it's also just a lovely place in which to walk around and read. If you like to read, there are occasionally some really good sales and you can buy certain books for less than 100 pesos if you're lucky. It used to be a theater and was repurposed to practically be what we literary fiends consider to be a book sanctuary. You can totally walk in there and just take pictures, and maybe walk out with a bargain if you so choose. It's also rated one of the top 20 book stores around the world, so you might as well see it.

Book worms who enjoy an afternoon coffee should head to El Ateneo bookstore. On the main floor, towards the back of the store, is a very quiet and very classy coffee area. During the early evenings, on some nights of the week, there are short, live piano concerts given in the area too, to accompany all those wishing to read and drink a coffee with light instrumental music in the background.

If you're not a Spanish speaker you won't find much amongst the contents to detain you. However the conversion from a theatre to a bookshop is worth the trip to look at

El Ateneo is arguably South America's largest bookstore. housed in an old theater, it is also its nicest one. it's a 5 mns walk from the apartment.

El Ateneo is a very cool bookstore that is housed in an old theater. It's pretty to look at - the balconies still hang over the main stage (which is now the coffee bar) and the overall arrangement is stunning, but aside from that, it's just a book store.

Super bookstore in an old, grandiose theater house. Cute little restaurant/cafe for lunch after browsing the books.

Definitively between the TOP 5 things to do in Buenos Aires. This old theatre from 1920s, now fully recycled, is one of most amazing bookstores you have ever seen, keeping the theatre style intacted. You can walk and read any of the books from the shelves, or take a seat and drink a coffee while your read at the cafe located where once was the stage's theatre. This place is beautiful, quiet unique and deserves you to spend some minutes/hours looking at its books.

I love this book store in an old theater. You can review your books sitting at the cafe that stays where the stage was.

This is the coolest book store I've seen. It has an old theater feel to it. The stage was made into a small cafe. And the painting on the ceiling was just beautiful!

One of my favorite bookstores in the world. Have an afternoon coffee and dessert at the cafe.

By far the most beautiful bookstore in the world, this famous bookstore is popular for a reason. I was blown away by the beauty of it. They also have a really great selection of books as well and even have some English books as well. This place is visited by lots of tourists, but locals flock here as well since it has the largest collection of books in BA.

Best bookstore idea, ever. Someone took an old movie theater and turned it into a bookstore. If you like to read, this is a great place to come and see.
