high-end shopping centers. Owner César Catena's occupation as a winegrower subtly brings out a unique feel to the place, including giant doors made from old wine barrel slats in the lobby and personal cellars with sparkling wine in each room. The 30 earth-toned rooms are elegantly simple with delightfully unusual amenities: along with king-sized beds, each comes with a balcony, yoga mat, zafu meditation cushions and a beautiful, hardwood-carved bathtub. The hotel also features a gorgeous indoor pool (walls and ceiling covered with black stone), fitness center, gourmet restaurant and spa.

I felt this hotel was all about the details, which was really great. The stairs leading up to the first floor almost look nightclub stairs, and the lounge itself is full of beautiful books and lush, comfortable furniture. It's very clear that the owners and designers of Mio love good wine and good food, as there are various hints of wine-influences all over the hotel--there are bath tubs and artifacts made of the same wood as wine barrels, and wine seems to be an overarching theme. The staff seemed a bit flustered to me though, as it seemed there are always so many guests coming in and out and that there was always more work than they could handle, but everyone was always nice and helpful. If you're interested in seasonal cooking, there's a restaurant that's also a part of the hotel called Sivela, and as you can guess, many of their dishes can be paired with a nice glass of your favorite wine.

The most fascinating thing about this hotel was that the owners are from Mendoza in Argentina and the wood that is used to make the wine barrels in which the famous Mendoza wine is fermented is also used in this hotel to make the baths and the sinks in the rooms and in the communal areas. The craftsmanship was amazing to see and it was such a fantastically interesting idea. The shape of the bath in the room was directly affected by the shape and size of the tree trunk that it had been carved from. That was a really cool fact! The indoor, heated swimming pool was also incredibly lush. The whole pool area felt like a steam room or wet room. It was a great place to feel all my pores opening up to be cleansed.

New York City

Argentine artist Mario Dasso hand-carved each bathtub from a single piece of native calden wood, using trees already felled by natural occurrence, like a fire. The hotel shows off his handiwork by making the tubs a central fixture of the Deluxe rooms, Junior Suites, and Mio Suites. Each rests on a marbled platform, completely open to the rest of the guest room.

A relative newcomer to the city's ever-growing range of upscale hotels. This one is backed by Cristina Catena, renowned for being the figurehead of one of Argentina's best-known wine families and her life-long love affair with the stuff is plain to see here: from the excellent wine list through to lovely little touches like a personal wine fridge in every suite. Decor is sleek and contemporary, the real star turn are the hard-carved baths by artists Mario Dasso in each suite - one of them looks like a giant walnut.
