Description
Considered to be the most important Christian building in the country, the St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest, Hungary, is a sight of everlasting proportions. The building of the church was completed ... Read more
in 1905 after a staggering 54 years of construction. It is also the third tallest building in Hungary and the tallest in the city of Budapest as city ordinances mandate that no structure can be higher than the church's 96 meters. Neo-classical in architectural design, the inside of the church has a quite baroque feel to it with the overwhelming amount of imagery and colors used. With concerts in the Basilica and word renown bells, St. Stephen's Basilica creates a memorable and unique experience.

Beautiful church and plaza. We visited in December, and there was a bustling market with crafts, food, and lights. Very picturesque.

The largest church in the city and the country can receive about 8,000 worshipers. Besides the beautiful interior and the amazing view from its dome, this church is a keeper of an unusual relic – the right hand of their first king Stephen. From the top of the dome, you can have stunning views of the city! Always remember to dress respectfully and be quiet when visiting the church.

St.Stephen's Basilica, a Roman Catholic Basilica is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary. There's a small Christmas Market in the church square during the winter times.

Beautiful basilica. One of the best features is a circular outside walkway up on the dome that gives a 360 degree panorama view of Budapest. Also altar unusual. Normally see large image of Christ but here it's Stephen the first king of Hungary. Worthwhile visit

One of the most beautiful churches in all of Europe, let alone Hungary. Most beautiful in the evening under the lights. Near an area of Budapest full of cafes, restaurants and shops, so its easy to visit when you're exploring the town.

The largest church in Hungary! This basilica is beautiful inside and quite a sight to behold from the square it sits next to, but the best part of it is the roof - excellent panoramic views over Hungary! I came during a rainy season but still the views were amazing. You can see far over all the rooftops and the various districts. They open till 5pm, and seem to have recently started charging for entry to the tower - 500 huf, but well worth the price.. They also hold classical music evenings.

One of the most beautiful basilicas I have ever seen. It is just gorgeous. The area around this church is very worth visiting as well. It is 5 minute walk from the amazing Parliament building too.

Local from Budapest

St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent István-bazilika) is the largest church of Budapest. The building was finished in Neo-classicist style in 1905, following 54 years of planning. Similarly to the Parliament, it is 96 meters high, which makes it the highest building of Budapest. Its capacity is 8,000 persons. The interior is characterized by rich ornamentation; the huge windows radiate dignity. This place of Catholic worship was named after St. Stephen, the first Christian king of Hungary, whose mummified body is buried in the undercroft. His intactly preserved right hand, the Holy Dexter, is kept as a relic in the Basilica's chapel. The Basilica is also a significant musical venue, where various concerts are held. If you are not moved by classical music, you should still visit the dome for a marvelous view of the city.

Absolutely beautiful to visit. Listen to baroque concerts and piano recitals when scheduled.
There is a wonderful christmas market in front of the Basilica during the holidays.
Stroll around, buy souvenirs and try all the different delicious regional food stands.
