of Hungary's feared secret police. The idea behind this museum is to give voice to the victims and freedom fighters who were imprisoned, tortured and sometimes killed in this building during Hungary's two 20th century terror regimes. This museum serves as both a memorial to the victims and as a time capsule of what life was like in Hungary during World War II and the 1959 uprising. Video tapes of survivors and press clippings of news events are available for viewing.

An experience that goes beyond the normal museum trip. Take the time to pay attention to all the details there and you'll get an idea of how far Hungary has come from these dark times.

Although it is a good place to know more about history when I was there it was so shocking that I could hardly speak...

On your way to Heroes Square you should stop in and take a look at this museum, especially if you are a WWII buff. Very interesting displays on how victims of the fascist and communist regimes were tortured and killed in that very building.

If you have any interest in the history of World War II and the Cold War, you have to see the Terror House. First of all the museum is set in an impressive building on Andrassy Avenue, which is one of the loveliest tree-lined streets in Budapest. During World War II the Nazi-allied Arrow Cross Party used the house as a place of secret imprisonment, interrogation and execution. When the Soviet liberated Budapest, they discovered the Terror House and decided to use it for the same thing. Inside the museum you can see various instruments of oppression, including jail cells and torture implements.

The House of Terror is a thought-provoking and somewhat disturbing museum. It contains exhibits related to the fascist and communist dictatorial regimes in 20th century Hungary and is also a memorial to the victims of these regimes, including those detained, interrogated, tortured or killed in the building.

Scared me beyond words but very interesting and informative. Makes you think differently about the world, eastern Europe, and political regimes.

Very interesting museum detailing the terrors of the political police, first under the Arrow Cross (Nazi) leadership during WWII, and then under the Soviets. There are English language pamphlets in each hall, but not all of the displays have translated plaques to say what they are. Still, the basement jail cells and torture areas speak for themselves.

Really impressive and very modern musem. It introduces you in the communism years. Must visit and you can combine it with the walk to the Heroes Square - its on the middle of the way from city center to the Heroes Square.
