Room was very comfortable and plenty of space. Breakfasts were awesome. Staff were very helpful.

In the heart of Budapest’s Palace Quarter is an actual palace that once belonged to Count Nandór Zichy in the 19th Century. Purchased by Italian management and renovated in 2009, this gem provides a delightful refuge off the beaten path away for the heavily trafficked tourist areas. Old World elegance combined with sleek Italian design makes this a favourite of more sophisticated European travellers. The rooms are quiet and clean with tasteful decor. The fact that it was once a palace means that the individual rooms lack the generic box structure of many of the larger hotels and have a few individual quirks. The hotel serves an excellent breakfast and is close to several Universities so a visitor is more likely to encounter young Hungarian students than large tour groups. The nearby Krudy Gyula street is for pedestrians and has a bunch of inexpensive restaurants that cater to the local population. Lumen a photo gallery and café that roasts its own brand of coffee is also on this street and usually contains an eclectic mix of local artists playing backgammon or performing impromptu concerts.

Local from Budapest

A bed for the night fit for a king, or at least nobleman: Count Nándor Zichy to be precise. The décor, in fact the whole vibe throughout the hotel, is a pretty snazzy combination of old and new. Aristocratic stately home and contemporary boutique hotel mesh unexpectedly well creating an ambience that a villain from a Bond or Bourne film would feel at home with. A room with a view of the atrium can match a room with a view on the piazza below. Decent sized comfortable bed and pillows and black curtains help ensure a comfortable night’s sleep. Everybody comments quite on how good the breakfasts are here. Free tea, coffee and snacks all day in the lounge are a nice touch, like a throwback to a kinder area. If they add a few more English channels to the cable TV, they’ll be a truly first class international hotel.

First to Review

The 8th district in Budapest used to have a nasty reputation but over the years it had cleaned up and adapted a somewhat bohemian style. It is conveniently located which makes this hotel even more attractive and yet off the usual main boulevard chain hotels.

The building faces a small neighborhood park with a church on the corner and the locals often sit on the benches. The former courtyard of the building where the reception area is received a glass ceiling making it a most pleasant space year-round. At the reception, a bowl of apples and professional and very helpful receptionist greet you.

The rooms are on the small side but the color schemes and furnishing are most tastefully chosen and executed. I was not surprised to find that the company that owns it is Italian. A lovely feature is the etched glass door to the bathroom with a screened on photograph of the wrought iron works from the hotel. Oh, speaking of Italian tastes and hospitality, the bathroom is also outfitted with a bidet.

Off the reception is a bar furnished with white leather chairs, flat screen TV, complimentary coffee, tea, and soft drinks throughout the day. This is a peaceful harbor in the middle of a busy capital city.
