Stayed here for few days for work. I was a little worried about this place because the place looked so outdated.
Overall it was a decent hotel. No bed bugs, clean room, good customer service.
The location is in South end and it's 5minutes walk to the mall/hynnes convention center. It's also walking distance to some tastey restaurants and cafes.
Not to be confused with a motel in the middle of a city, the Midtown Hotel has long stood as a mainstay of budget hotels in Boston. For how long? Judging from appearances alone, I would say since the 1960’s. Yes, it seems outdated. Yes, it reminds me of roadside middle-of-nowhere motels. Yes, ‘funky’ can be properly used to describe this place. But sometimes, old-world world charm is refreshing when translated into the hospitality and politeness of the Midtown’s staff. For a simple bed and bathroom, there’s no arguing with the facts. With their location near Northeastern University, the Prudential, and the Christian Science Center, the Midtown Hotel is a great value for travelers that look for simplicity.
Walking into the Midtown, I was instantly reminded of the budget motels my family used to stay at to break up the long car ride on the way to grandma and grandpas in Ohio. In short, the place is outdated. The bedspreads and carpets look faded and old and the decor is your classic "hotel art." That said, if you just want a cheap place to conk out after a day of exploring the city--without sacrificing location--the Midtown Hotel just might be your place.
My family stayed here a couple of times when they were visiting me at Boston University. Note, they stayed here not because it's a wonderful hotel, but because it was the only thing remotely close to Kenmore square area with rooms under $300/night.
The value is good, for Boston, but the hotel is nothing special. It's kind of old and a little run down. The closest T stops to it are the E branch of the Green line, which is always a pain for a number of reasons.
That said, it is close to Copley Square, the Prudential Center, and the Christian Science Plaza---go see the Maparium!
If you're in town visiting out of obligation, this is your place to go. If not, consider other options.
