The Fortune of Neptune, in front of one of the many palazzos, or palaces, near the square is a beautiful statue dedicated to the sea god Neptune. The nearby Palazzo del Commune houses an impressive art museum containing the works of many great artists, including Michelangelo.

Piazza Maggiore is the centre of Bologna and its most famous piazza. With the Basilica di San Petronio along one side and restaurants opposite. Sit on the steps in the summer, and watch the world go by. During the summer open air concerts and cinema are held in the piazza which are free and a lovely way to spend an evening.

Bologna's largest and liveliest square, located in the heart of the historic centre. It's surrounded by San Petronio cathedral and it houses the Nettuno fountain, one of the most beautiful in Italy. In summer there are concerts, open air cinema shows and other events.

Named in honour of Bologna patron saint Petronio - 8th bishop of the city from 431 to 450, the Basilica is the most imposing (a length of 132m, a width of 66m, a height of 47m) and important church in Bologna. The construction started in 1390 under the supervision of the architect Antonio di Vincenzo. In 1514, Arduino degli Arriguzzi proposed a new project with a Latin-cross aimed to overtop St Peter's Church in Rome. According to the legend, Pio IV stopped the costruction of this megalomaniac dream and requested to build up the Archiginnasio. Even the facade was left incomplete; the central nave covering and the apses shooting, designed by Girolamo Rainaldi and directed by Francesco Martini, were completed only in 1663; the lower naves were closed by rectilinear walls.
Built in 1470 by Lorenzo da Prato and symbolized by the most prestigious and older functional organ in the world, the bolognese musical Chapel was once very famous. Another organ, more recent (1596), belongs to Baldassarre Malamini and despite its 400 years it is still functional as well.
In 1894, Museo di San Petronio opened with the projet of T. Azzolini.
There are then four crosses of stone between the chapels 1-2, 9-10, 13-14, 21-22 that, according to the legend, St Petronio placed at the perimeter's angles of the town then, in the next centuries, the circle of the selenite walls have been defined.

A famous piazza of Bologna, featuring the statue of Neptune and a cool thing where you stand by one pillar, your friend stands across the piazza at another, and you can talk to each other like you're side by side.

Very cool square with lots going on, beautiful architecture and an impressive statue of Neptune. There are hidden secrets here, including an area where sound travels up a pillar on one end of a wall and down another. There is also a perspective trick with the Neptune statue that, if you stand in a certain spot, it looks like he has a... well... look it up.
