Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) was built between 1563 and 1566 by the Flemish sculptor Giambologna. It is a symbol of the power of the Pope: he ruled the world like Neptune ruled the seas. At the feet of the statue there are four little angels. They represent the rivers of the four discovered continents at that time: Ganges, Nile, Amazon River and Danube.

Good place to chill or wait for friends. There's a fountain here (one of few in the city), but it's slow moving so get your etiquette up!

The Fountain of Neptune is a monumental civic fountain located in the eponymous square, Piazza Nettuno, next to Piazza Maggiore, in Bologna. Here you can found one of the seven secret of Bologna.
The finger of Neptune seen from the Sala Borsa, seems to have an erect phallus. There is even a sign on the pavement of the square indicating the location to see the result: a white square near the entrance to the Sala Borsa. It is said that Giambologna has created this effect because the cardinal who commissioned the fountain had asked the artist a "reduction" for the giant Neptune. The artist cut its rates but did not give up on this joke

The Fountain of Neptune, located in the Piazza Maggiore (main square), was sculpted in 1566. It became so popular that the Bolognese authorities had to establish groundrules prohibiting "bathing." Anyone caught bathing in the fountain was subject to fifty lashes.

One of the strongest symbols of Bologna is he, the "Giant, " as it is called here, Neptune instead to the story.

Liked by his uncle (Charles Borromeo) of neo-Pope Pius IV, to wish a long pontificate, the Neptune is the work of the Fleming Giambologna and is in a fountain located exactly on the intersection of the cardo and decumano, which is the geographic center Bologna.

The Neptune is 3.20 meters high for 22 kilos of weight and Strap on a trident, which inspired the symbol of Maserati, the fountain at the foot of Neptune, consists of four tanks, has a 90 nozzles for the water fountains and sculptures bearing Papal emblem.

Originally powered by such a work of taking "baths Mario" (wrongly attributed to the consul Gaius Marius), water now comes from the Source Remonda pipelines, which bring water from the basement of San Michele in Bosco.

They also say that Neptune, by design, would have a greater reproductive system, but the Church forbade Giambologna to pursue this goal, so he adopted the ploy of the left thumb, still visible to the observer from behind.

Since then this caused no little embarrassment, the Church ordered to put the statue of the pants.
