      Big Island Hotel Insider
Perhaps the epitome of “island paradise,” Hawaii’s Big Island (also generally referred to as just “Hawaii”) attracts nature-loving, beach-bumming, romantic-getaway-seeking travelers from all over the world. Aside from impeccable diving in pristine waters and some of the world’s best seafood, the Big Island offers long strips of white sand beaches, unparalleled star-gazing from the remote wilderness, and live volcanoes(!) And no matter where you roam on this slice of paradise, a hotel is never far away.

      Big Island Hotels
Hotels on the Big Island are often ocean and island-themed, though that doesn’t mean they’re all kitschy. In fact, there are numerous luxurious retreats perfect for a getaway: The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is popular with weddings, surrounded by banyan trees, and offers an ocean view from nearly every room. Likewise, Hapuna Beach Prince and Hilton’s Waikoloa Village are remote and peaceful, though a bit far from the island’s biggest tourist draws. For a detour from the norm, Kalani Oceanside Retreat in Pahoa is a unique not-for-profit hotel that encourages harmony with nature (and offers nude yoga classes). Of course, the world-famous Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea resorts in Waimea are both classy and welcoming, with staff that treats you like ohana (family).

Rest assured, you don’t have to break the bank to stay on the Big Island. Many affordable options are in Kailua-Kona on the western side of the island, where the pace of life is slower and lavish resorts have little place. Try King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel (and we dare you to say that three times fast), the Kona Seaside Hotel, or Naniloa Volcanoes Resort, all of which offer picturesque views of both beach and sunset, modern decor, and convenient amenities.

      Things To Do
There are numerous things to do on the Big Island, mostly involving getting out and into Mother Nature. A horseback ride to Hiilawe Falls is a great family activity, as is a hike through gorgeous Pololu Valley, while the Papakolea Green Sand Beach is a unique opportunity to see the magic of volcanic reactions in action. Explore the lava tubes in Kailua-Kona, Akaka Falls State Park and the breathtaking Rainbow Falls in Hilo, and venture out to the Hawaii Volcanoes National State Park to explore Kilauea Volcano, which has erupted continuously since 1983. Tour the caves, craters, lava tubes, and flowing magma in one of nature’s most spectacular shows. Here, it’s almost imperative that you stay at the recently renovated Volcano House, where views of the Halema’uma’u Crater and native rainforest are visible from every room, and even the fireplace in the lobby is made of lava rock.

Of course, marine activity is big here too: spend some time snorkeling in the pristine waters of Kealakekua Bay Historical Park, where you can see the fabled green sea turtle and other exotic marine wildlife. Kayaking and sea cave exploration are also big here. Hapuna Beach Park in Waimea is the largest sandy beach on the island, and offers plenty of body surfing, swimming, and tanning - though it’s busier than the more remote beaches on the island.
