Description
The end of the Cold War in Berlin came as something of an accident. The Government of East Berlin knew it was going to have to lift travel restrictions at some point-- it was clear the war was over. ... Read more
At a press conference in 1989, a government official, through a series of misunderstandings, relayed to the people of Berlin that they were free to travel right that moment. Within the hour, thousands of East Berliners were showing up at checkpoints (like checkpoint Charlie) all over Berlin, demanding entry into the western world. After much confusion and tension, travel was allowed, spelling the end of the Berlin Wall. Checkpoint Charlie is, perhaps, the most iconic (west of the wall) of these checkpoints in Berlin. In the American sector of the city, this was the waypoint into and out of East Berlin for decades. Today, all that remains is a facsimile of the signpost that read "You are now leaving the American sector"

These days it looks like a tacky tourist attraction rather than when it was in the frontline of the Cold War. There are some interesting displays in the nearby free outdoor exhibition

Although the story is interesting there are many more things to do in Berlin that are much much better.

Tourist trap surrounded by tat skips and shit bars. Avoidv unless you feel you absolutely must see two students dressed in period military uniforms.

Nothing special itself but a very symbolic place for the role it had during the War.

One nostalgic place to be in, Checkpoint Charlie is the crossing point between East and West Germany in the past. It's called Charlie because it's one of the three checkpoints (A - Alpha, B-Bravo, C-Charlie). Here you will find a self-explanatory write up wall of it's history and how people tried to cross over to the other side.

There is also a specimen of the types of walls that were improved over the years to prevent people from climbing over.

Checkpoint Charlie was first set up in Aug of 1961, when communist East Germany erected the Berlin Wall to prevent its citizens from fleeing to the democratic West.

A replica of the famous way station between East and West during the Cold War this "Checkpoint Charlie" is spoiled by tourists and its surroundings, including but not limited to a large KFC sign. The original is in the Allied Museum in Berlin.

Incredible from a historical standpoint and when you know what to look for around the actual checkpoint, but overall not a mindblowing sight in itself and easily summed up by pictures.

The famous checkpoint remains and the two bored fellows who keep watch over it are perfectly happy to have their picture taken with you for a fee.

The first thing that you'll notice about Checkpoint Charlie is that it's in the middle of a really busy part of Berlin. Keep your eyes peeled and watch where you're walking!

When I saw Checkpoint Charlie it was still a real checkpoint and the wall hasn't been toppled yet so everyone had to line up when crossing to the East. When it was our vehicle's turn, they ask for our passports, they stare at us then check everything in the vehicle, from the trunk, engine and under making sure no escapes. Right now it's only a tourist attraction.

Checkpoint Charlie is a famous tourist spot in Berlin and is usually very crowded. It's also located in a relatively busy street so be careful taking pictures!

Certainly a tourist destination but worth it to see the military style photo opps. The polish mafia is said to be the ones running the dudes dressed as both American and German soldiers, posing for pictures for a small fee with tourists. You can also buy your take home version of a gas mask, classic Russian military winter hat, and other WWII inspired swag here.
Walk right to the Berlin wall from here, enjoy the information on the walls telling the story of the struggles between friends and families during the cold war.
You can also visit several related historic places right around the same area.

Fun to see, again very touristy. Funny to see the guys dressed up in American gear acting like Americans (with German accents). The performance was on point.

The main border crossing between East and West Berlin during the years of the wall has become a tourist spot where you can read about events right where they happened. Find out about the standoff between American and Soviet Tanks and the tragic fates of many who tried to escape through it. Nowadays Friedrichstrasse is a highly commercial street dripping with capitalism so you can also feel the irony.

Odd that something so iconic and significant 30 years ago could be so unassuming, wedged between office buildings and shopping malls, today.

I wasn't wholly impressed by Checkpoint Charlie - seems more like a tourist trap with cheeky costumed actors portraying the soldiers who used to solemnly run this checkpoint. Still, it's worth a look since you're at the Wall anyway.

A little disappointing. It's hard to understand what the place meant historically when you're surrounded by hundreds of tourists taking pictures with fake soldiers and buying tacky souvenirs. The information and museum are alright though.

This is a historical site that you must visit within Berlin. This is one of places, where you can imagine how it would have been to live at the "old Berlin" and cross the line to other side from east to west or other way around.
You can have your photo taken with soldiers. I´m not sure if it costs, since I didn´t want. You can also get a stamp to your "passport" sold at the place. It isn´t very expensive, I think. But no visit is complite without visit to the house of Checkpoint Charlie.
