is known as a young neighborhood popular with students, and Alex, as the square is affectionately known locally, takes on the jubilant and progressive attitude of the district’s residents. It was at Alexanderplatz that the largest anti-Berlin Wall demonstrations occurred, protests that eventually led to German reunification. The square is currently (2011) undergoing a massive renovation and is inaccessible.

Alexanderplatz is conveniently located near a major interchange station for S-Bahn and U-Bahn as well as regional trains. The vibe is very international and it's close to a lot stuff (restaurants, bars, shopping stores) for a pretty good price. Walking distance to Christmas Markets (Nov-Dec), Fernsehturm, Museuminsel (Berlin's Museum Island) and Brandenburg Gate.

Berliners often call it 'Alex' for Alexanderplatz, which is a large public square and transport hub in the central Berlin.

A really nice square in the middle of the town, with some great modern architecture and a great place to get some food or beer or do some shopping or just hang out.

Not very beautiful but a must see if you come to Berlin. Most public transportation has a stop here. A lot of fast food and some nice stores like Galeria Kaufhof and Primark.

One of the easiest rail stations to use once you get used to it. I love the honour system here where you don't have to swipe because everyone has a ticket beforehand. I got the unlimited week pass and it was so worth it.

This is a great place to check out, it even was in the Bourne films. Busy and kind of touristy we still like to walk around this place just for the scene. Always lots of things to see.

Large square at what was the heart of East Berlin. Largely rebuilt in the 1960's and it shows.

Alexanderplatz is a large square in the centre-east of the city. It's had many transformations over the years - from market in the 1800s, to a bustling centre of nightlife in the 1920s, to a symbol of socialist might in the 1960s, to a centre for capitalism today. Worth a visit for the socialist-era buildings that surround the platz: the Fernsehturm, the Congress Centre, the Haus des Lehrers and the Reisebüro. The World Time Clock is also pretty impressive.

Wasn't really impressed. Apart from the nice clock in the middle of the square nothing really noticable. You can skip that if you don't have enough time.

Alexanderplatz is a great place to get your bearings on Berlin. It is easily reachable by public transport and is easy to find because of the T.V tower. There are some excellent shopping malls and department stores just off the square as well as the Parkinn hotel, which is one of the tallest buildings in Berlin and if you go at the right time, you can base fly off the top of it for a fee!

A hubbub of tourists, locals, touts, and everyone in between, Alexanderplatz is a great spot for people-watching or a quick snack. The open feeling of the pedestrian plaza is appealing, and it's a good base to attack the rest of the city.

Plenty of shopping, dining, and an edge of nightlife. We walked around this plaza on a frosty January evening to enjoy warm schnitzel, hot apple cider, and a pop into some stores for laid-back evening shopping. Or marvel at some of the renovated architecture: the Fountain of Eternal Friendship is a beautiful monument erected for post-war Germany - it stands in the square near a funky, space-like world clock.
