There’s more to the Lebanese capital than politics and history. Time Out hit the nail on the head when they called Beirut “the wild child of the Middle East.” Vibrant party neighbourhoods, trendy pavement cafes, excellent gastronomy, and traditional Middle Eastern hospitality all add to the buzzing atmosphere.

After years of conflict Beirut is back on top as one of the Middle East’s top holiday destinations. The glamour of the 1960’s, when film stars would stroll along the seafront, is back for good. Art galleries and upmarket restaurants open on a weekly basis, while the jet set are being tempted back by the new boutique and luxury hotels that the city has to offer.

Hotels in downtown Beirut are good for travellers who like to be in the heart of the action. Historic mosques and ancient buildings sit beside designer shops and trendy pavement cafes. Party animals should look for hotels in Ashrafieh, an area of town known for the party neighbourhoods of Gemmayze and Monot Street. There are also some nice shops and cafes for daytime exploring.

If you’re looking for a hotel room with a sea-view, look for accommodation in Ain El Mraiseh. This district stretches alongside the Corniche promenade, where locals gather to watch the sunset. You’ll find Beirut’s highest concentration of high end hotels here, as well as plenty of big chain restaurants and coffee shops.

Hamra is another tourist friendly neighbourhood, mostly known for its shopping. In the 60’s, Hamra Street was referred to as Beirut’s Champs Elysees. The resemblance is still there, with lots of trendy restaurants and cafe bars as well as a fine selection of hotels. Art galleries and antique shops add to the upscale atmosphere. There are some great bargains to be found in the neighbourhood, with a few chain restaurants and mid-range hotels too.
