When you're in Beijing, you get the feeling you're in a country that wants you to know exactly how powerful it is. Beijing has been the longtime capital and home of the imperial dynasties for over 2000 years. Walk into Tiananmen Square, the largest urban square in the world, and you'll instantly be overcome by the vastness and immensity of the space. Try to take it all in; the Forbidden City, which once housed emperors from the Ming and Qing dynasties dating back to the 1400's, is now the location for the Palace Museum, filled with artifacts from all eras of Chinese history. Viewers around the world witnessed the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and the one-of-a-kind Bird’s Nest Stadium and Water Cube still draw visitors of all types. At ... Read more
restaurants, look out for Beijing’s culinary specialty, Peking duck, a type of roast duck served with Chinese pancakes and hoisin sauce. Dadong Roast Duck Restaurant is one of the recommended places to try it. When evening comes, check out the Bei Lu lake district, popular with young Chinese and expatriates alike for its many bars and restaurants. Hotel options in Beijing range from five-star international chains to more simple Chinese lodgings.

Both temperatures and pollution reach their peak levels during summer and winter in Beijing. Fall is the perfect time for a day trip to the Great Wall, with pleasant weather and plenty of blue, smog-free skies. Spring, with similar weather, is a great alternative. Be aware that numerous holidays throughout the year (Chinese New Year in January/February, Labor Day on May 1, National Day on October 1) can make booking hotel and transportation reservations very difficult. For many, avoiding periods of heavy domestic tourism is more important than planning a trip based on the best weather.

Although I hated the pollution and massification, I felt it was a very special place. Full of art, and tradition it felt like a very good visit (maybe one of the best in my stay in China).

Beijing is a big and great city. Although the API is not so good, but there are many historical places here such as The Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City and Yuhe Yuan etc. Beijing has many famous spot like Olympic Stadium, I heard my sons said got 32 or 36 spots, but we spent there 5 days , so cant visit all, only choose some of popular places.

Beijing reminds me of a number of European cities. Very odd to most people at first with the East vs West idea. However, look at it as a combination of ancient, modern, and every stage in between.

Beijing is an ancient city with super modern hotels, office buildings, airports, while having ancient homes (hutongs) night markets museums and buildings.

It is pollution heavy to say the least. It was so bad that I was only able to clearly see the sun for an hour or two each day when I was within the city. There was a lot of liter as you see in most large cities worldwide. It had the same ambience of a couple of other major Asian cities (Bangkok and Manila come to mind) that I have been to, granted a different climate and completely different types of vegetation.

Beijing is also starting to have malls and chain restaurants pop up all over the place. The subway system is interesting in that it is has several rings with a couple of straight through shots in various places. Yes I cruised the subway with the munchkin while we were here in China. It was definitely a bit of a surprise to me. However it completely reminded me of every other subway that I have been on as well.

Then there is the traffic which really sucks unless you are out and about at odd hours (thankfully we were and I get why) but wow. Even though most of my time in Beijing was on a holiday weekend, it was still crazy to see the amount of traffic that was out and about.

Definitely a destination worth going to, to find something different than most other places I have been. I would love to go back and experience some of the nightlife, but the history is what I was here for on this trip.

A great starting place for our trip around China, with so many major historical points of interest to see. The only downsides were the heavy smog (we never saw the sun) and the unbelievable traffic! I could not imagine living in such a place, but for a few days visit it was tolerable.

This was my starting point for the TransSiberian journey. I spent a week in Beijing exploring the major sights: Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, saw some hutongs, visited some parks. It's a busy city and there are people everywhere - but rest assure that the food in Beijing is always GOOD!

The seat of government for the world's most populous nation, Beijing can also lay solid claim to the title of China's cultural capital. A fun, lively, rough-around-the-edges city that sprawls for an area roughly the size of Belgium (six ring roads, really?!) the metropolis boasts some of China's biggest sights (Tienanmen, the Forbidden City, the nearby Great Wall), but also rewards in-depth exploration. There's a funky and innovative arts scene, awesome food, and a cool forward-looking vibe that's hard to translate but easy to feel while you're here. The historical sights alone would merit a weeklong visit, but you'll gain as much wandering through the traditional hutong neighborhoods and drinking tea outside a cafe as you will packing your itinerary with wonders.

Half Day Mutianyu Great Wall Hiking
Really nice experience in Beijing! Located in suburb area, it is less crowded and most of the visitors are the foreigners. Join a half day local tour is easy and comfortable with private tour guide accompanied. I suggest you to take the cable car (at least one way) to enjoy the panorama view of the whole project.

Here recommended a hot tour: http://www.chinafuntrips.com/beijing-tour/mutianyu-great-wall-half-day-tour.html
