Huge hostel, part of the big chain, very clean, friendly staff, with video games available (!) good location near the Gracia neighborhood. I saw a mix of backpacker types and families staying there. Breakfast is 6.50 for hot food or 4.50 for continental.

Possibly the funkiest hostel in the city, the Generator is part of a new wave of luxury budget accommodation for backpackers. As soon as I looked through the window, I knew I would love this place, decorated with hundreds of coloured lanterns and paper sculptures hanging from the ceiling. The shared dorm rooms and private twins are clean, light and are decorated in white with colourful artwork. There's also a funky bar area, an upstairs lounge with foosball table and a quirky seating area surrounded by wooden tree-like sculptures.

When looking for a stylish, cool, social, clean, convenient hostel in Barcelona, Generator on Carrer Corsega is my No.1 pick. The staff are friendly and very helpful, the interior is fun (check out the swing seats in the reception), the location is close to many of the sights and transport connections can be found within a 5-minute walk. Importantly, the price is very reasonable. Generator Barcelona opened in March 2013, and offers dorm rooms, private rooms and even a suite. The orange lantern-lined café/bar was my favourite place to chill out, alone or with new friends. Don't miss the relaxed vibe of the Gracia district above Carrer Corsega - less touristy than most of the central Barcelona districts, it has cute squares, interesting music venues, cafes and restaurants. Check out Heliogàbal on Carrer de Ramón y Cajal for a guaranteed buzz after dark.

This might be the coolest, cleanest hostel I’ve ever been to. I adore the hanging chairs and lounge area in the lobby, and the floors themed by Barcelona neighborhoods. Staff are friendly and know good places to eat and drink in the neighborhood and beyond. The Generator is also a good choice for environmentally conscientious travelers, as the entire chain embraces environmentally friendly policies like recycling, the purchase of sustainable goods, and energy efficient premises. The hostel’s bar is cute and reasonably priced and details like outlets in every bunk, bathrooms in every dorm, a lounge with a massive tv and an even bigger stuffed dog, a fully equipped game room (foosball, pool, videogames, computers), and even a photo booth more than make up for the hostel’s one major flaw: no kitchen for guest use. It’s a little away from the main drag (Las Ramblas, Plaça Catalunya, etc) but you can walk, bike, or hope the yellow line in Verdaguer to get wherever you’re going. For afternoon coffees or middle of the day fixed price menus, try Más, a bakery with creamy café amb llet, sugary baked goods, and a surprisingly varied lunch menu on offer.

This hostel is as easy on the eye as it is on the wallet. Unusually for budget accommodation, the owners have spent a lot of time making sure the furnishings are quality and the finish doesn’t disappoint. Aside from the modern décor, the rooms are comfy, clean and conveniently located, just a few minutes from the nearest metro and a stone’s throw from the Sagrada Familia. But the real bonus is the staff - from receptionist to bartender, they've got customer service nailed. Something you can't take for granted in Barcelona!
