appearance in such novels as Moby Dick and movies as "And Justice for All." Designed by Robert Mills in 1815 along with its sister monument in Washington, D.C., Baltimore's version has a ground-floor museum, smooth cylindrical spire and white marble construction. However, financial considerations forced the monument to be simplified before its completion in 1829. Find it Wednesday through Saturday, just north of Charles Street Harbor, and hike up the winding staircase for a breathtaking view of Maryland's largest city and its most historic district.

Washington, D.C.

Baltimore's Washington Monument is the gleaming (and towering) beacon of the city's historic Mount Vernon neighborhood. At nearly 180 feet tall, it's hard to miss this landmark. Much like the Washington Monument in Washington, DC, you can climb an interior staircase to the very top for excellent views over the city.

Okay, Baltimore's monument may not look as grand as D.C.'s, but it's history and we love it. Plus it makes for tons of fun, free things to do! The Mount Vernon Conservancy sponsors loads of music and dance events and free yoga which usually take place in the parks surrounding the monument. There's also a movie series in the warmer months! Check their website before you go and if nothing is on the docket, bring lunch and hang out at one of the tables in the park. Climb the spiral staircase inside the monument for a good workout and a breathtaking city view at the top.

The first monument dedicated to George Washington, it commemorates his resigning as Commander and Chief of the Continental Army in Annapolis.
