Wonderful museum with a diverse collection both inside and outside in the sculpture garden. It also has a restaurant. And all of this is free! No excuse not to get some culture.

Baltimore Museum of Art, or BMA, is free! This gorgeous building is as striking inside as it is out. The sculpture garden is both peaceful and stunning. There are a number of benches where you can just sit and enjoy the garden, or a little walking trail around the different works. Inside, there are multiple floors with art from nearly every century, including modern art. If you'd like to grab a bite to eat, and are making a day of it, there is a nice restaurant and bar on premise, where some times they will have live jazz. If the weather is nice, you can dine outside overlooking the sculpture garden.

Ellicott City

In comparison to Washington D.C., Baltimore has only a small number of full-fledged museums, and the Baltimore Museum of Art is one of them. Right next to the John's Hopkins Campus, the BMA has been a Baltimore institution since the early 1900's and focuses on modern and contemporary art. They host several events each month, with several being family-friendly. A frequent rotation of exhibitions means there's always something new to see. It's a great place to spend the day, plus they have an excellent cafe and Gertrude's restaurant, a local favorite.

I have visited the BMA many times, but never knew it had the largest collection of Matisse's work in the WORLD. Guess it makes sense since Gertrude Stein was one of his most important patrons. (The restaurant in the museum is named for her.) You can spend all day here, there's a beautiful sculpture garden, and it's about a 15-20 minute walk from Penn Station depending on your pace. Still can't believe it's free -- every time I go in there I forget.

A free art museum with an amazing collection! What's not to like? They have the largest collection of Matisse paintings, and they just renovated the contemporary section.

Fantastic local museum located near the Johns Hopkins University. Not nearly as large nor as stuffy as museums in larger metropolitan areas.

This a very nice medium size art museum. It has a a lot of different styles for its size. Easy to get to. We especially liked the art exhibit of the Cone sisters.

Beautiful museum in Baltimore. Recently acquired a gorgeous Andy Warhol collection. The Cone Collection is amazing especially the early Picasso. A great mixture of contemporary and classics. Lovely for a stroll through with your family or friends.
