Local from Baltimore

Springhill Suites in downtown Baltimore is one of the more unique places to stay in town. Because the building was once a major bank, the lobby and even the rooms have all kinds of charm from years past. The lobby is a grand room with incredibly high ceilings, and the rooms, albeit average size for downtown, also have high ceilings, making it feel so much bigger. There are unique skylights and big windows facing downtown. The Inner Harbor, Camden Yards, Powerplant Live, and concert venues are all within walking distance. There are also plenty of close places to enjoy a night out on the town.

The impressive lobby of SpringHill Suites hints to the building's past. Indeed, before it was a hotel, the building was a bank. Marriott did an excellent job in maintaining the architectural integrity of the building, particularly the high ceilings. The hotel has numerous meeting and event spaces, making it a great option for the business traveler.

Ellicott City

It's funny, there is a Hampton Inn right across the street from the SpringHill Suites, and both are so similar it's difficult to tell them apart. This hotel is another chain that took advantage of existing buildings and preserved the architecture of an old bank building, adding some nice design to what would otherwise be cookie cutter. I didn't think the outside of the building was as great, but stepping in I was pleasantly surprised by the high ceilings and dark wood. The hotel was really quiet, which was a nice departure from some of the other bustling hotels. There is kind of a partition between the front desk and lobby, and I thought the lounge area of the lobby was really nice- kind of private, but relaxing and comfortable. I'd read the other reviews about the meeting room, so I had to check it out- it's so cool that they left the original vault intact- makes you feel like you are having a super secret meeting. Another good hotel choice in a location that makes it easy to get around Baltimore.

Local from Baltimore

Judging by the assembly of people hanging on the corner and the one or two dudes (NOT employed by the hotel) that offered to walk me up to my room, I was nervous about staying here. The location is central, but somewhat gritty. That's kind of how Baltimore is though: One minute you're on a neatly groomed street and then you walk a few blocks wondering how the heck things changed so quickly.

When I got inside the building, I was immediately at ease and felt welcomed by the friendly staff. They made me laugh and were just pleasant people in general. The building used to be a bank, so the main lobby is a huge, open space -- this is where they host the continental breakfast every morning. Walking through the common areas of the hotel, I felt like I saw every single pattern that my father ever wore on a sweater on the couches, sofas, carpets, rugs, etc. A little hokey but very clean and functional. The room itself was surprisingly classy with no hint of the slightly cheesy decor of the lobby. Exposed brick, dark wood bed frames, soft lighting, big windows, and subtle color scheme really made for a beautiful, cozy room. And I could sleep for days in those beds!

At the end of my visit I asked to see one of the meeting rooms and boy, was that cool. It used to be the vault back when the property was a bank, so the doors of the room are the doors of the old vault! Pretty fancy if you're looking to impress.

Old bank building turned hotel, the SpringHill is located in downtown near the Harbor Inn and walking distance to Little Italy and Fells Point.
