temple architecture in the world. The centerpiece of the site (its setting mostly flatter and therefore less dramatic than that at Ajanta) is unquestionably the monolithic Kailasa Temple, the world's largest such construction, a fantastical representation of the mythical adobe of Lord Shiva. With 34 temples, visiting this UNESCO world heritage site could be an all-day affair, and it's worth engaging the services of a qualified guide near the entrance to explain the iconography of the Kailasa Temple alone. The access town is Aurangabad.

Holy God. The Kailasa temple - Ellora's centerpiece and single largest feature - might be one of the most astonishing things you will ever see. A monumental feat of rock-cut architecture, the towering temple complex (meant to recall the mythic home of the god Shiva) has been carved, from the top down, out of a single mass of rock, leaving a monument that is nothing less than a small city. Fabulously ornate and epic in scale, it really has to be seen to be believed. While the rest of the Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain caves in the Ellora complex (the Kailasa temple is technically just 'cave 16') are not in my personal opinion quite as stunning as those at nearby Ajanta, they're still nothing short of amazing, and you're doing yourself a profound disservice if you don't see them while you're in the area.

So once in Aurangabad, they tell you about 2 caves. The caves of Ellora, and the caves of Ajanta. Go To Both. I cannot stress that enough. Lots of people only take the time to see one, and they are so different. And everyone that I talk to, almost split 50/50 on which they prefer. For me personally, I loved Ellora. I can't believe the first time I went to India I didn't even know the place existed! Do yourself the favor and save cave #16 for the end. There's lots of bats here, I found out here that I think I'm actually allergic to the little guys. It's a long trek both ways but try to see them all. And make sure to go up the side and climb a little to get to the top back of cave 16 and see the view from above. Amazing. Definitely worth the trip to Aurangabad.
