Surrounded by soaring mountains, filled with art deco architecture, and renowned for its liberal attitudes, the city of Asheville is a gem of a city just waiting to be discovered.

Asheville’s reputation definitely precedes it. Rolling Stone have named Asheville “America’s New Freak Capital”, while others call it “Paris of the South” and “San Francisco of the East.” It’s been ranked as one of America’s happiest cities, the best small city for vegetarians, and is considered to be one of the best US destinations to retire to; or to reinvent yourself in.

During the Jazz Age, Asheville was a popular getaway for well heeled East Coasters. Today it’s more of a hipster heaven, with microbreweries and hyper local restaurants galore.  The famous weekly drum circle attracts new age enthusiasts, while the excellent live music venues offer a great place to enjoy up and coming new bands. Historic attractions like Biltmore Village, the huge array of art galleries around the River Arts District, and a wide variety of spas add an extra edge to Asheville.

One of the best times of year to visit Asheville is during winter, to see the famous fall foliage. The trees in and around the city turn spectacular shades of orange and red, and are generally at their best towards the end of September and beginning of October.  Summer is another popular time to visit the city. The pleasant weather offers ample opportunities to get out and hike sections of the Appalachian Trail or just relax in the city’s beer gardens.

Asheville has an excellent calendar of events and festivals, and it’s worth finding out what’s on before booking your accommodation. Room rates can go up while the events are taking place, but sometimes it’s worth paying a little extra. There are lots of events to choose from each year. Some highlights include the Asheville FringeArts Festival at the end of January, the Asheville Wine & Food Festival in August, and the Shindig on the Green at the beginning of September.

There’s always something happening in Asheville. Whether you want to be in the centre of the action or on the outskirts, with Skyscanner you can always find the perfect hotel for your trip. Choose from quaint B&Bs and budget hostels as well as world famous hotel chains.
