Here is where you can see the remnants of devastating 1964 earthquake. You can see the houses, several feets below. People in this neighborhood made a human chain to rescue each other.

Get on a bicycle and pedal along the coastal trail to Earthquake Park. Here you can see what the Good Friday earthquake did to the landscape in 1964. The massive ripples are still left visible in this park of birch trees and miniature ponds. Alternately you can drive here in 5 minutes from downtown Anchorage and take a few minutes to walk the nature trail to see how the land here was altered by mother nature.

I love earthquake park. Not because of the history necessarily, but the location. Come here a few times and you'll see a moose, or 2, or 10. You'll see amazing Alaskan nature. Jog thru the trails, enjoy the views, watch a sunset. Get away from the "madness" of bustling anchorage and enjoy nature. Learn some history, be glad you weren't here that day and that we don't have a repeat!!

Earthquake park is a testament to the raw power and fury that mother nature can unleash (and did) on Anchorage in 1964 when 130 acres of a west side neighborhood slid 2000 ft below to the sea in the state's most devastating earthquake to date. At the far end of the trail through this park, there's a panorama with a good view of the Chugach Mountains and on a clear day, Mt. McKinley.

Great views of the city. Drive farther west to the next parking lot for more views and often times you will see moose.
