"Béguinage," the Begijnhof dates back to the Middle Ages and contains a wealth of history. Explore the secret chapel where the Beguines worshiped after the Calvinists ran them out of their Gothic cathedral, or simply marvel at the peace and quiet after a long day in the bustling city. While you're there, also be sure to check out number 34 - the Houten Huys. Not only does it serve as a great example of tall, Amsterdam-style houses, it's also the oldest wooden house in the city and one of only two that still remain there.

BEGIJNHOF
Tucked away, the entrance is a bit clogged, you have to enter at the “Spui” through the large wooden door then you automatically are inside the “Begijnhof” the Beguinage. The Begijnhof, one of the city's oldest inner courtyards in Amsterdam. Originally a kind of more relaxed convent called a "Béguinage," the Begijnhof dates back to the Middle Ages and contains a wealth of history. Explore the secret chapel where the Beguines worshiped after the Calvinists ran them out of their Gothic cathedral, or simply marvel at the peace and quiet after a long day in the bustling city.

A nice story is, is that my niece in the English church at the Begijnhof is married to a GLOVE. According to an old maritime use. A single girl was not allowed travel abroad just by her own. And being in love with a American soldier, just after the second world war, she wanted to travel to him in Oregon and start a live with him in the USA. The solution to travel was to get married, symbolic, in the English Begijnhof Church, by the glove, representing her American Soldier. Later when she arrived by ship in the US, Oregon, she re-married. And she still is married to the same American Soldier!

While you're there, also be sure to check out number 34 - the Houten Huys. Not only does it serve as a great example of tall, Amsterdam-style houses, it's also the oldest wooden house in the city and one of only two that still remain there. The other, the second, wooden house is on the Zeedijk Amsterdam.

I'm spoiled as for years my church has used the chapel in the Begijnhof for special services so for me, it's a very peaceful, silent place. During the day, unfortunately, not so much. Tourists usually do not respect the call for silence and I've seen tour guides take their whole group in and talk loudly.
This is not just a tourist place, it's these ladies' homes.
If you do go at the right time, it can be a magical experience: beautiful, quiet and calm in the midst of a bustling city.

A secret garden in the center of Amsterdam. Well, maybe not so secret, since it’s a popular attraction for both locals and tourists, but it’s still hidden from sight behind buildings. The courtyard forms part of one of the oldest, and still active, convents in the city. Or rather, the proper term is a béguinage - which refers to a community of women who choose to serve God without retiring from society. Visitors can roam certain parts of the garden, although they are of course reminded to be respectful of the fact that many ‘Begijns’ still live here, and this is technically their yard. Another interesting thing to note is that the entire courtyard is one meter below the street level of the rest of the city, which was the actual level during Medieval times (the low-lands have in fact been rising!)

The Begijnhof is an area within the downtown comprising of the oldest homes (one at least is wooden) in Amsterdam. Named after pious women called "Begijntjes" who lived like nuns taking in the orphans and the poor and providing them with shelter, these homes are lovely, and definitely worth a visit.

A very peaceful area where the Begijns use to live and worship. No talking while walking through the serene courtyard. One of the oldest houses still standing in Amsterdam. This wooden house dates back to 1477.

Quiet and quaint neighborhood in a secluded area, originally built in 1346 as a sanctuary for the Begijntjes. Peaceful area includes the Begijnhof Chapel, Engelse Kerk, and the oldest house in Amsterdam (Het Houten Huis).
