The Amsterdam History Museum was every bit worth the visit. Just viewing the paintings of the city by the Dutch Masters is worth the price of admission.

Known simply as the Amsterdam Museum since 2011, this lively historical collection often gets overlooked by first-timers to the city, who are usually more wowed by its big trio of museums (the Rijks, the Stedelijk and the Van Gogh). But with more than 70,000 artifacts relating to the many aspects of Amsterdam's past, this city-center site makes for an interesting visit, and in several sections references the city's long and ongoing commitment to LGBT rights.

One of the best museum exhibits I've seen, Amsterdam DNA walks you through the history of Amsterdam with some amazing interactive features. Every section you watch a new video which concentrates on the stories behind certain objects. As you move through the exhibit you realize the objects they used in the video are the ones on displayed. No longer are you just looking at things behind a glass pane, there's a story behind it that really connects you to the past. Along the way, you take a quiz to find out in the end what kind of Amsterdammer you are. Really fun and interesting. They also have rotating temporary exhibits on a variety of topics.

For a museum with such a modest premise, the Amsterdams Historisch Museum (now just called the 'Amsterdam Museum') succeeds remarkably well. The exhibits chronicle the rise of Amsterdam from its founding as a tiny fishing village in the 12th century all the way up to the present day, and while this may not compare to the wonders of the nearby Rijksmuseum, it's a fascinating look into the rise of what was one of the world's first great middle-class cities.

I honestly wasn't expecting much of this museum, but it was actually awesome. It's set up in an extremely interactive way that keeps you intrigued every step of the way. Amsterdam has so much history and this is a great place to learn about it!

We had only a short visit to this museum which ranges over three large floors of a former cloister and presents the rich, long history of Amsterdam describing everything from politics, subcultures, football to religion. Some good paintings can be seen and it is all accessible to an English speaker. It is located in the middle of the city so easy to get to.

This museum contains all the history of the city: how it was built, how the first people came here, how it was under foreign dominance and much more. I really enjoyed the way they combined tons of info with multimedia: it made everything more interesting.

Even without visiting the museum you can take a wander through this vast hallway for free where immense & very impressive paintings by Dutch Masters are hung. Even if you don't visit the collection, this museum is seconds away from the hustle and bustle of the Kalverstraat and has a great cafe & huge courtyard.
