The canal cruise is definitely a good way to see Amsterdam at a relaxed pace.
You will see how the lock in the canal work which was very interesting.

Watch for a spot under the bridge where everyone parks their bikes. That was something to behold. I was too slow to take a picture of it. Seeing hundreds, maybe thousands of bikes in that spot was amazing. lol

Great way to see the entire city! I took the 1 hour tour, and it covered a good chunk of the city (Started at Anne Frank Huis and went past attractions such as Central Station, NEMO Science Museum, National Maritime Museum and VOC Ship to name a few). If you are short on time it's a good way to sightsee, but I wish I had done the Hop On/Hop Off canal tour instead, so if you have time I would recommend doing that so you can visit the sites you'd like to see.

This was one of our excursions with Viking. It is definitely a thing to do when in Amsterdam. I love looking at how all the buildings were built. Absolutely beautiful.

BOATING IN AMSTERDAM
Of course a trip by boat through Amsterdam is best interesting. But I decided last year to agree otherwise. It seemed to me much more exciting to Navigate a boat all by myself. Via, via, I had heard that you could learn the skills, as an apprentice Skipper, at the Amsterdam Boat Company to boat a ship on the Amstel River and the Amsterdam Canals. And at the same time, theoretical knowledge, needed to get to know the navigation rules. Under the leadership of Ron, the master, instructor, owner of the Amsterdam Boat Company, I learned the ins and outs in no time needed to secure a safe Journee on the canals. At the end of the course I received even the diploma skipper of the Amsterdam Canals. Happy with the result achieved, I have purchased a boat for myself and cross now regularly in and around Amsterdam. So if you have the dream to eve yourself to sail with a boat through Amsterdam, take a look at the site of the: Amsterdam Boat Company. Because from the water, the Amsterdam city is the most beautiful! So you see, you can make your Nautical dream come true.

I wouldn't do this tour again. You don't get to see much when everything is closed off with a roof over the boat and the windows are not clear. I'd recommend "The Ultimate Amsterdam Boat" instead or "Those Damn Boat Guys".

This was a hit with our friends to take Canal Cruise Amsterdam. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the buildings and see some locals who lived in the boat.

Everybody will tell you, you must go on a canal cruise! Even i am one who will say this to others who are not from here and are visiting Amsterdam. I got a friend in Lima, Peru and she was in Europe in the year 2013, and really, she came over for just one day as she was staying in Belgium at that moment. So we met on Central Station and i already told her, we are going on a canal cruise. The weather as not fine so we sat dry as we were cruising on the canal boat.

But, i find it irritating sometimes to be on, as we both love our photograpy and take pictures of everything, it's like in a plane, because she was visiting for just one day, she sat nearby the window and i was more in the boat so i could not see it clearly. A rainy day so a dark sky in march, springtime.

So for me, it's not so nice to be on it, but there is a new boat in town, wich i have not been on yet, but i would love to be. As it's open, if i wis i could get my licsence myself to learn to be on the canals with my own ship or boat. And it's open so i could make my photo's as i would love to see the outcome from them. Without vilty glas wich is also possible with a good clear sight.

BUT, if you get here the first time, you must go on a canal boat for sure my first time, yes there is photo in black and white of it, even i can't clrealy remember myself, i was about 2 or 3 years old, in the arms of my daddy who carries me on board. Right back in the seventies somehwere.

Even now, i will take a cruise myself every now and then, but i am wishing there were shipping company's out there who are cruising with an open boat.

More info on a Canal cruise and learn how to? In an Open boat?
Then click here: https://www.amsterdamboatcompany.com/

The photo's will show you how it looks on a dark and rainy day in march 2013. Not sitting by the window.

An absolutely marvelous way to see Amsterdam. You'll be astonished by how deftly the captains turn the boats and the close proximity of the top of the boats to the bridges. Really awesome experience!

Everywhere you see in Amsterdam are canals so what better way to get around town without a canal cruise? Its amazing how these boats navigate around the narrow canals without any traffic controls and yes, no accidents.

When in Amsterdam, be sure to take a canal cruise at least once. This is a lovely, relaxing experience, providing a great vantage point for enjoying the city's varied architecture. We have been on a a few Amsterdam canal cruises over the years...Each had a different itinerary and each was lovely.

We took a night time Amsterdam canal cruise and it was amazing. However, there was a light drizzle that evening that put a damper on things.

If you visit Amsterdam you must do a tour of the canals! I recommend trying to get a ride on one of the smaller boats instead of one of the big tourist boats if you can. The canals are such an important part of what makes this city special.

The city is surrounded by and connected with various canals. Take a canal cruise at night to appreciate the bridges adorned with twinkle lights or do a hop-on hop-off adventure.

As touristy as it comes, the boat excursions through Amsterdam's famous system of canals are nonetheless quite a good time, and give an interesting view on the city you wouldn't otherwise get. These low and surprisingly nimble little craft maneuver through the narrow waterways while a guide gives narration, and if you're burned out on museums (or literally burned out on coffeeshops), it's a great way to spend an hour or two getting to know the city.

one of my favorite local river cruises...not only refreshing but beautiful sights along the way, specially the tall and narrow dutch houses. Tried doing both the day and evening cruise. Evening is kinda special because of the lights along the canals.

Did the Canal Hopper eco tour which is an open boat tour with a guide in a 12-person electric boat. We did the Hidden Treasures green line and it was absolutely delightful. The day was beautiful, the guide was knowledgeable but didn't prattle on and having the smaller boat was great for maneuvering through the smaller canals.
A relaxing and enjoyable way to see Amsterdam!

Awesome way to experience Amsterdam!

I've never done a canal cruise and this is a great first time experience for me!

Drinks are flowing all around and the people serving the drinks are super fun!

I highly recommend sitting on the back end so you can bask in the amazing weather while sailing through the streets of Amsterdam.

Make sure to play the Flugel drinking game!

A canal cruise is a great way to get a first impression of Amsterdam. It's a nice, relaxing experience as you sit there and watch the city go by, with all the beautiful old houses and bridges.
