The College Hotel may not feel like it’s in the centre of town but it’s certainly a great location - right near the Concertgebouw, museums and De Pijp quarter. It’s a classy affair walking through the hotel’s lounge - from their stylish interiors, large green courtyard and cosy nooks in front of the fire place - you feel like a VIP at The College. It’s also an event manager’s dream. There are seven spaces available to hire from grand ballrooms, salons to bar areas for weddings, meetings or whatever you fancy. The building was a 19th-century boys’ school (once run by nuns) so rooms come in all shapes and sizes and are warmly decorated in golds and browns. Interesting fact: the hotel is used to train hospitality students who are well advanced in their study so expect lots of energy and big smiles.

Local from Amsterdam

Already from the outside, you get a sense of history from the building that houses The College Hotel. Built in the late 19th century, for many years the building served as a school for higher studies. Although the red brickwork and architecture are imposing and perhaps seen as austere from the outside – this was after all a ‘no nonsense’ kind of place - the inside of the building is warm, welcoming and undeniably chic. From the courtyard to the upstairs halls between the rooms, with their tall archways and floors of heavy stones, it’s a thrilling experience to roam through the building (especially for those history buffs). The rooms all have their own particularities but I would say the winning touch is the espresso machine found in each (for those much appreciated morning coffees in bed). The patio is available any time the weather permits, and is a lovely place to grab a bite and a drink during the summer time. For all those other not-so-great-weather times, there are cozy fireplaces with intimate seating next to the bar and lounge area: a great place to unwind with a hot drink after a long winters’ walk.

Boutique charm at its finest -- the College Hotel is a lovely, quaint retreat from the mayhem of the city center. It feels like an Ivy League university dorm building when you first walk in (perhaps the origin of the "college" name?), and the dim interior is punctuated by soft golden lamps that give it a New England feel - an interesting contrast to the quirky, free-wheeling city beyond its walls. The high-ceilinged rooms have large beds and bathrooms with black and grey accents, giving them a unique - but strangely romantic - decor. The downstairs bar is clearly the place to be - a modern street bar style with lots of guests mingling, and a great choice of spirits. The mission of the College Hotel is to train young students in the hoteling business, which means you are often redirected to supervisors when you have a question. Nevertheless, I found the majority of the staff I encountered to be helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly - if not fully experts just yet.

The College Hotel is a pretty little boutique hotel with an easygoing attitude. There's a garden out front, a courtyard in the back, and the rooms come with complimentary robe and slippers. It felt like everything slowed down when you were here, which makes it a great place to crash after roaming the "Las Vegas of Europe" (as I've heard Amsterdam called).
