The Lloyd hotel has a slightly weird concept: within the same hotel it has rooms from 1⭐️ to 5⭐️. Each room is styled in a unique way drawing on the work of Dutch designers and artists. The 1⭐️ rooms are minimalist and have shared bathrooms, the 5⭐️ rooms are ridic. I stayed in a 3⭐️ room that had a weird convertible bathroom and was spacious and comfortable. The location of the hotel isn’t great – a little far out of town, but that does make the place very peaceful. There’s a good cafe and a couple of shops and restaurants nearby but for anything else you’d need to get further into the centre. The restaurant is good modern European food and the bar has some imaginative cocktails.

LLOYD HOTEL
Lloyd Hotel and Cultural Embassy is a historic building in the Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam. The building was established in 1918 in the eclectic style, designed by architect Evert Breman, commissioned by the Royal Holland Lloyd (KHL). The KHL did use the hotel as advertising, to recruit clients for passengers heading to South America. From 1921 to 1936 the building was used as temporary accommodation for immigrants, mostly poor Eastern European Jews. During the second World War it was a Nazi prison and after the war as a juvenile prison. After an extensive restoration, the building has served as a hotel since 2004, placed on the monument list in 2001. The hotel has 117 rooms.

The Lloyd is a grand old building that feels like it could be in the movie 'The Shining’ - but it’s more interesting than creepy. Rooms are impressively decorated and cater for all budgets and needs. The five-star rooms boast eclectic touches like milk bottle chandeliers, lime green bathrooms, massive thick rugs, even a grand piano! Four-star rooms or lofts pay homage to Dutch history while three to one star rooms are still very chic but basic and more importantly clean. Half the fun is choosing which unique room is for you. The hotel is located about 20 minutes bike ride from the city and it feels like it would be more fun in the summer months (with the lovely courtyard and dockland views.) Breakfast is 17.50 euros and you’ll find things like eggs, salmon, and fresh juice at the buffet. Very interesting place indeed!

San Diego

What a strange and charming hotel! It apparently was a detention center and a prison at one point, so the very layout already sets it apart from other hotels. Take the steep, cement steps lined with historic art, or zip up to your floor in the modern elevators, but definitely take the time to explore this intriguing place. No two rooms are alike; surprises await in each one - like the lime green bathtub in one, or the grand piano I heard one guest mention was in his. The hotel is coupled with the Cultural Embassy, so whether you take in one of the thought-provoking art exhibits above the restaurant, or stand in the open center of the hotel that allows sunlight through six floors, your stay will be anything but boring. Oh, and free Wi-Fi is a huge plus.

New YORK!

Boutique hipster heaven. But in egalitarian Amsterdam, that means there are rooms for all budgets, which is really a treat. It's out in the Eastern Docklands, which can feel like a little bit of a hike from the center (there's a tram stop not far a way), but the views are beautiful, and it's a great break from cuteness in the historic city center. The only drawback is that the restaurant isn't great--really good for brek, but it kind of goes downhill from there.

We got a 3 star room for 5 nights. Location was great for the price, 10 mins bike/tram to both sides of the main area. The rooms were clean and unique. We recommend switching rooms to enjoy different designs. The reception has all the information and tickets needed for the city.
