Not many cities in the world have as many layers as Amsterdam does, with its on-the-surface wild side and its deeper, more sophisticated side, offering plenty of interesting things to do for any type of visitor. As the capital of The Netherlands, Amsterdam is a center for the arts and culture and has a scintillating history that many overlook. Although the Red Light District is vibrant (in its own way), culture vultures seek out the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, (or National Gallery), and the famous canals that form some of the city’s traditional thoroughfares. To experience the city as the locals do, rent a bike and pedal the narrow streets. The restaurant scene is up-and-coming, serving a new wave of Dutch food ... Read more
that has given refreshing new twists to traditional Dutch cuisine. Additionally, international influences have gained stature here and you shouldn’t be surprised to find a good sushi joint or even an Indonesian restaurant. At night, head to one of the many bars or nightclubs, and join in the shenanigans – Amsterdam really knows how to party! The city has a reputation for being wild, given its legal recognition of both the sex and drug trades, but Amsterdam does have some tamer, and equally interesting attractions that draw just as much attention.

Amsterdam fills up with camera-clad tourists in the spring when temperatures are mild and the tulips are in bloom. Summer, which tops out at a downright pleasant 75°F (24°C), is nearly as crowded with school trips and family vacations. During Amsterdam’s relatively mild winter when temperatures are in the low 40s (6°C), rooms are cheaper and you won’t have to battle the crowds, but it would certainly be a shame to miss the chance to see the flowers in their full glory or bike around the city, another quintessential Amsterdam experience.

A wonderful European city that has the misfortune of being Europe's go to party town. While there is no shortage of great things to see and do here, you will be bumping shoulders with obnoxious party goers. While the missing star doesn't reflect the city itself, it does reflect the people you will encounter.

I just returned to my second visit in Amsterdam, and damn I love the city:
from bike culture to its people's friendliness (even drizzling rain doesn't fade the Amsterdamers), delicious foods, leisurely boat-rides and quite family friendly.

Highly recommend it!

We had about two weeks to visit ten cities, and Amsterdam was not what I was looking forward to the most. I was so wrong. Out of all the cities I've been to in Europe (and anywhere, quite honestly) Amsterdam is by far my favorite. The city is clean, full of character, and has plenty to see and do. I cannot recommend this city high enough, and I would LOVE to live there!

This is a really fantastic city with lots to see and do, from art galleries and museums to coffee shops and the red light district, surely there's something for everyone. Plus, it's incredibly beautiful with its canals and charm.
