There is no charge to visit this wonderful museum, although donations are accepted. Located at the Cultural Education Center, across the Plaza from the State Capitol Building, the museum features permanent & temporary exhibits. The purpose of the museum is to demonstrate New York's natural & cultural diversity. There are approximately 12 new exhibits each year, in addition to an extensive selection of long time favorites such as the history of Harlem, birds & animals of the state, an art collection, a history of fire department apparatus, the history of New York City, native peoples of New York, 9/11 & many more.

This New York State main Museum with rotating displays that feature the New York State History. Disability parking around the side and it a pay lot, with on street meter parking will need a 1 hour to 1 1/2 to visit the site.

Founded in 1836 as the State Natural History and Geological Survey, the museum continued as a research institution while embracing fine art in addition to natural history and state history. More than 200 lectures and programs are offered to the public each year. The museum is the biggest attraction in northern New York--free admission, a learning/play area for children, and a wide range of exhibitions makes this the perfect destination for families.
Exhibits at this eclectic museum are as varied as the Empire State itself. You'll find sparkling minerals and an authentic Native American longhouse lodge, dioramas featuring local flora and fauna, and a moving exhibit on the World Trade Center and 9/11. Little-known events in New York history are brought to life, such as the controversial post-world-war II resettlement camp for holocaust survivors in Oswego, NY. The building is as grand as its collections, anchoring Empire State plaza across from the massive and ornate capitol building. My favorite of many memorable sights in this comprehensive state museum and library is the beautifully restored 1895 carousel carved by Charles Dare of Brooklyn. In addition to the colorful assortment of horses, mules and deer, there is a tea-cup-like "love tub" and gracefully rocking sleigh. The carousel spins in its own specially designed circular atrium on the museum's 4th floor--this alone is a must-see in this delightful FREE attraction.
