Description
A hole in the ground could not be more dramatic than what you’ll find at the Poás Volcano National Park. Spanning 16,000 acres, visitors are able to step toward the edge of a crater 950 feet deep. ... Read more
Small geysers and lava still erupt, though there hasn’t been a major eruption here since the early 1950s. The mountain and lake provide a pleasant backdrop for hiking, and the Visitor’s Center offers all the geologic education one could hope for.

We unfortunately weren’t able to see the volcano. It was too cloudy, but the drive up is stunning!

So beautiful, but because of a recent eruption, please check to see if it is open. Otherwise Irazu is nearby also.

Trails that lead through cloud forest stunted and twisted, not only by volcanic emissions but the rigors of the cold windy high altitude habitat. Lake Botos fills an extinct crater at the end of one trail, and is home to many cloud forest birds including hummingbirds, tanagers, flycatchers, toucanets, Costa Rica’s national bird the clay-colored robin, and the area’s most famous avian resident, the resplendent quetzal.

it was very cold and rainy, we barely saw the volcanoe but it was a nice experience. Just need to be lucky to have a nice weather up there! You can take a walk in their large trails and see some of the Flora and fauna.
I recomend you to go with gloves and a big jacket! you can buy food there but it's better if you bring some food with you

If you're lucky, the fog will clear (or come in after you) so you can view the volcano. Don't linger too long though -- prolonged inhalation of sulfur can cause headaches and intestinal issues. It's a little cooler here because of the altitude, so consider dressing in layers; and perhaps bring a poncho/umbrella because the rain is unpredictable. If you're up for a walk/mild hike, there's a lovely path through the dwarf forest to the lake (bring your luck so the rain and fog don't obscure it).

Drive right up to the top of the volcano and then walk to the edge of the crater, over a kilometre in circumference. Spectacular views.

A decent outing. The crater and lagoon are spectacular to look at! Then that's it. Time to go home. There's plenty of walking to do, if that's your thing.

This is pretty close to the city and worth checking out. A bud and I just got a taxi...went to the volcano...took pics...hit a local place for an authentic Costa Rican meal and back to the city before we headed out to the interior.

It's 2h-3h from San Jose, and it's an amazing volcano, with a lot of restaurants near it, you can also go hiking on its surroundings.

A couple of hours from downtown San Jose, this park is definitely worth planning a half day around. The park's main features are three volcanic craters. The Poás crater is the main attraction and is the only active volcano in the park. Its activity can vary greatly, and at times can shut the park down due to high levels of sulfur, so make sure it is ok before planning a trip. The other craters are now extinct volcanoes, with the Botos crater now filled with emerald green water. In addition, to the volcanoes the park trails lead you through some very lush cloud forests.

The whole park is between 2400-2700 meters above sea level so if you are sensitive to higher elevations take the hike slowly. It is best to visit in the morning, when you have the best chance of clear skies.

Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a great tour for families!

In the central mountain range of Costa Rica both of most beautiful attractions welcome families every day.
Poas Volcano is 37 km (23 miles) from San Jose on narrow roads that wind through a landscape of fertile farms, coffee plantations and dark forest. There is a paved road right to the top, although you´ll have to hike in about 1 km (1/2 mile) to reach the crater. The volcano stands 2,640 m (8,659 ft) tall and is located within a national park, which preserves not only the volcano but also dense stands of virgin forest. Poas´s crater, said to be the second largest in the world, is more than a mile across. Geysers in the crater sometimes spew steam and muddy water 180m into the air, making this the largest geyser in the world. There´s an information center where you can see a slide show about the volcano, and there are well groomed and marked hiking trails through the cloud forest that rings the crater. About 15 minutes from the parking area, a long a forest trail, is an overlook onto beautiful Botos Lake, wich has formed in one of the volcano´s extinct craters.

Be prepared when you come to Poas: This Volcano is often enveloped in dense clouds. If you want to see the crater, it´s best to come early and during dry season. Moreover, it can get cool up here, especially when the sin isn´t shinning, so dress appropriately. Admission to the national park is $10.00

La Paz Waterfall Gardens

La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a pleasant natural wonder on the slopes of the Poas Volcano. Not a single waterfall but a series of four powerfull falls and cataracts that crash dramatically down a steep, heavily wooded gorge. In addition to an orchid garden, hummingbird garden, you must visit their huge butterfly garden, which is easily the largest in Costa Rica. A small serpentarium, featuring a mix or venomous and non-venomous native snakes, the wild cats area features Pumas, Jaguars, Ocelots, and others.
How to visit?

If you are spending a night in San Jose, you will probably want to take this tour. The recommended departure time is at 7:00am so you will get to Poas Volcano in the morning, when is the best time to see the Poas Volcano crater.

If you are driving to Arenal Volcano or Monteverde Cloud Forest, this can be also a great stop on the road. Although you must take a different route, enjoy the landscape and know one of the most interesting destinations in Costa Rica.

Some flights arrive very early in the morning and many people use to rent a car and drive to their destinations and doing a stop at Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens.

Entrance fee to Poas Volcano: $10.00 per person
Entrance fee to La Paz Waterfall Gardens $49.00 per person including a great buffet-lunch

Considered by most to be one of the most breathtaking sites in the entire country, the Poas Volcano sits high above 14,000 acres (5,666 ha) of various habitats and life zones which make up Poas Volcano National
Park (Parque Nacional Volcan Poas). Rising up to 8,885 ft (2,708 m), Poas remains one of Costa Rica's largest and most active volcanoes. This fact alone is enough to attract thousands of visitors per year.

The Poas Volcano National Park is a great place to do some hiking. Nothing too strenuous though. If the clouds permit, you get to see the breath taking view down into the Poas Volcano. If you are up for a little bigger hike there is a beautiful lake to see too. For the curious mind there is a small museum area that educates you about the history of the Poas Volcano, and also about the wildlife in the area. The altitude here is quite high, so it is a little chilly. A jacket and maybe some pants are recommended. You want to arrive at the National Park early so that you beat the clouds. A trip to the La Paz Waterfall park after seeing the volcano rounds out a perfect day trip. The Poas Volcano National Park is about 1 hour from Atenas.

This is an active volcano, and is really HOT. My favorite part was stopping on the way back to San Jose at a small restaurant and watching the women handmake the tortillas. I love the friendly, kind people of Costa Rica
