Top Accra hotels by interest

The vibrant and colourful capital of Ghana, it’s hard to deny that Accra’s got it going on. Among the hustle and bustle of street vendors you’ll find trendy bars and restaurants, designer shopping and modern art galleries. With its lively atmosphere, Accra is exactly what you’d expect from the capital of the country known as the Black Star of Africa. Ghana is renowned across the continent for its stability and safety, and Accra’s star is definitely on the rise.

There are lots of hotels and luxury resorts to be found near Accra’s beaches, particularly around Labadi Beach. Clean sand, warm waters, and a fantastic buzz make it a popular spot for a day trip if you’re staying in the city centre. Just remember not to swim on Tuesdays: this is a cultural taboo. Still, there’s plenty to do if you’re not taking a dip. The beach front is lined with cafes serving up grilled fish, while street performers serenade passersby with the sultry sound of reggae.

More hotels can be found closer to the centre of Accra, with a range of European hotel chains as well as smaller family run establishments. Oxford Street in the Osu district is a popular nightspot, with some of the best bars and restaurants in the city. It’s also a busy destination during the day, with some of Accra’s top shopping opportunities. There are lots of places to grab souvenirs and a bite to eat.

Although Accra doesn’t have any huge sights to see, there are plenty of activities to tempt culture vultures. The National Museum of Ghana plays host to plenty of interesting exhibits about Ghana’s past and present, while the Artist’s Alliance Gallery features plenty of excellent paintings and sculptures by local artists- most of which are available to buy. The bustling Makola Market is also worth wandering through. Packed with colourfully dressed locals and stalls selling everything from wooden beads to seasonal fruit, it’s an absolute feast for the senses.
