Terminal Information – Departing
This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.
Flights to London leave from the international terminal. This terminal has a wide range of shops where you can splash the last of your dollars. Enjoy duty free shopping in designer stores like Coach, Burberry, Gucci and Hermes or browse art as SFMOMA Museum Store. Dining options include international favourites like Mexican and Italian food as well as American style burgers and salads. The international terminal also has a couple of museums, a spa, and #converge@flySFO: a meeting space for discussing business ideas.
Terminal Information – Arriving
British Airways flights arrive at terminal 5, Virgin Atlantic land at terminal 3, and United land at terminal 2. All three terminals are well connected to the city by public transport. The fastest way to get to London is the Heathrow Express train, which calls at terminal 5 and the station for terminals 2 & 3. The journey takes 15 minutes to reach Paddington station. Terminal 5 and terminals 2&3 also have an underground station where you can hop onto the Piccadilly Line: the cheapest way to reach the city. Road transportation is offered by black cabs and private hire cars as well as coaches and buses. Car hire from Heathrow Airport is a good option if you're not daunted by urban traffic or high parking tariffs.
You need a valid passport to fly from the USA to the UK. If you're an American citizen you won't need a visa if you're visiting London on holiday, but may need one if you're visiting for other reasons or have a criminal record. We recommend getting to the airport around three hours before your flight is due to depart, giving yourself plenty of time to get through security.
