You need a valid passport to visit the USA, and it must be valid for the full duration of your stay. The Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) allows most British citizens to visit the states for up to 90 days without applying for a visa. Tourism, some business visits, and passing through en route to another country are all covered by the VWP. If you want to stay for longer, or if your passport doesn't say 'British Citizen', then you should apply for a visa the usual way by talking to your local consulate.
