Terminal Information – Departing
This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.
Etihad flights depart from Terminal 1. The departure lounge has a great range of high-street shops including Fat Face, Boux Avenue and Monsoon. There's also a Biza Duty Free: because you're flying out of Europe you can make the most of tax free shopping. Restaurants in Terminal 1 include Cafe Balzar, Giraffe, Bar MCR and The Grain Loft. There's also an Escape Lounge, if you want a add a bit of luxury to your trip. The lounge can be busy during the summer and pre-booking is essential.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Etihad flights arrive at Terminal 3. There's a cash machine in the arrivals hall, if you forget to exchange money before you fly. There's also a duty free shop in the baggage claim area, before you go through immigration. Ideal if you want to buy a bottle of alcohol before officially entering the dry UAE. There's a taxi rank outside the airport: expect to pay about AED 75* (roughly £14) for the taxi journey into the city centre. Etihad provide free shuttle buses to Dubai. There are also a number of public buses, which cost AED 4* (about 75p). You can hire a car at Abu Dhabi Airport from a number of places: remember to compare prices with Skyscanner.
We recommend arriving at the airport about two and a half hours before your flight is scheduled to depart. British citizens get a 30 day visa on arrival in Abu Dhabi, which can be extended by a further 30 days by visiting an immigration office in the UAE and paying a fee. There are fines for overstaying your visa, so don't take any chances. If you are a British Overseas Citizen you will need to apply for a visa before flying to the UAE.
What to expect in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is four hours ahead of Manchester. The currency is the United Arab Emirates dirham (AED). The UAE is a Muslim country, so it's important to dress respectfully. Keep shoulders and shins covered. It's better to wear a bathing suit than a bikini, but if you're visiting the Corniche beach it doesn't matter as much. Abu Dhabi is a lot hotter than Manchester: you can expect an average temperature of 18°C in January and 36°C during August. Although Abu Dhabi has a reputation for being expensive and luxurious, the prices are generally lower than Manchester. Alcohol is only available in hotels: find and compare hotels with great bars in Abu Dhabi at Skyscanner.
