Airlines that fly from London to Salzburg
British Airways, Monarch, Thomas Cook Airlines, Norwegian Air International, EasyJet and Ryanair all provide direct flights from London to Salzburg. British Airways, Monarch, Thomas Cook Airlines, Norwegian and EasyJet fly from London Gatwick. Ryanair fly from London Stansted.
London Gatwick Airport is home to two terminals, North and South. British Airways and EasyJet flights depart from the North Terminal. Monarch, Norwegian Air International and Thomas Cook Airlines flights leave from the South Terminal. It is recommended that passengers arrive at the airport at least three hours before their flight is scheduled to depart, though if you are using the online or mobile check in facilities provided by your airline you can save time at the airport and go straight to security.
Both the North and South terminals offer a vast range of facilities for passengers. There are high street stores like WHSmith, Boots and Mango along with more exclusive brands like Pandora and Hugo Boss. Food and drink options include Costa Coffee, Jamie’s Italian, Nando’s, Giraffe and a Wetherspoon pub. There’s also a currency exchange and a duty free store.
Stansted Airport has just one easy to navigate terminal. Passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before their scheduled flight departure time. In the departures lounge, there is a great range of shops, restaurants and bars. Last minutes holiday essentials can be found at WHSmith, Boots, Fat Face, Dixons Travel and Sunglasses Boutique. For a bite to eat there’s Starbucks, Burger King, a Giraffe restaurant and a Wetherspoon pub.
Salzburg Airport is located around three kilometres southwest of Salzburg city centre. There are two terminals at the airport but all flights arrive to Terminal 1. Once you have passed through customs, you’ll find a range of facilities including some convenience stores and cafés, a travel agency and a bank.
Car hire companies are based on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park, accessed by a covered walkway from the terminal building. Companies operating at the airport include Hertz, Sixt, Sunny Cars, Avis, Budget, Buchbinder and Europcar.
There’s a taxi rank and a bus terminal right outside the airport. If you choose to take a taxi, it should take between 15 and 20 minutes to reach the city centre. A number of local buses depart from outside the terminal building. Bus line 2 leaves every 10 to 15 minutes and makes the journey to Salzburg’s main and centrally located railway station. The journey takes around 20 minutes and costs €2.50*. You can buy tickets from the Newscorner store in the terminal, from machines at the bus stop or from the bus driver.
What to Expect in Salzburg
Summers in Salzburg are warm and rainy whilst winters are cold and dry. Temperatures reach the mid-twenties throughout July and August and then fall to below freezing in December and January.
Prices in Salzburg are generally a little cheaper than in London. A mid-range three course meal for two costs around €60.00*, a bottle of beer costs €4.30* and a cappuccino costs €2.80*. Travel on public transport or by taxi is significantly less expensive but you may find supermarket shopping a little pricey.
