British Airways, Air Mauritius and Thomson Airways all provide direct flights from London to Mauritius. British Airways and Thomson Airways flights depart from London Gatwick Airport whilst Air Mauritius depart from London Heathrow Airport.
London Gatwick is split between North and South terminals. Both Thomson Airways and British Airways flights to Mauritius depart from the North Terminal. The airport advises passengers on long haul flights to arrive four hours before their scheduled flight departure time.
The North Terminal departures lounge has all of the facilities you’ll need to stock up on holiday essentials or get a bite to eat before your flight. There is a currency exchange, internet access, a duty free store, high street shops and restaurants, and a premium lounge too.
London Heathrow has four terminals. Air Mauritius flights depart from Terminal 4. Passengers on long haul flights are advised to check-in at least three hours before their scheduled flight departure time. The check-in area for Terminal 4 is located on the first floor of the building.
Once you’re through to the departures lounge, you’ll find a great selection of facilities including currency exchange desks, free Wi-Fi and a duty free store. There are lots of eating, drinking and shopping outlets to choose from and a premium lounge available for a fee.
Mauritius International Airport is also known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. It’s located 48 kilometres southeast of the island’s capital city, Port Louis. There’s just one terminal at the airport.
In the arrivals hall, you’ll find a currency exchange, tour operators, an Information Desk, a number of cash machines and an Airport Taxi Service counter where you can pre-pay for a taxi. Car hire desks are also located here with companies including ABC Car Rental, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.
If you choose to travel by public transport, there are three bus services which stop at the airport bus stop, in the car park. Bus 9 operates every 10 minutes and travels between Mahebourg Bus Station and Curepipe Jan Palach South Bus Station, Bus 10 operates every 20 minutes and travels between Mahebourg Traffic Centre and Rivière des Gallets, and Bus 198 operates every 15 minutes and travels between Port Louis Victoria Square Bus Station and Mahebourg Bus Station.
If you’re a British national, you don’t need a visa to travel to Mauritius. However, you will need a passport valid for the proposed duration of your stay with at least one blank page. On arrival, your passport will be stamped and you’ll be allowed to enter the country for up to 60 days. At this point, you’ll need to show evidence of an onward or return journey.
What to Expect in Mauritius
Temperatures in Mauritius are consistently high, rarely falling below 20 degrees. The warmest time of year is January to February when temperatures regularly reach into the thirties. However, this is also the rainiest time of year with short but heavy rain showers most days. October and November are the driest months and still see temperatures reaching the high twenties.
Tourist resorts in Mauritius can be a little pricey but, if you’re prepared to venture off the beaten track, you’ll find lots of affordable places to eat, drink and shop.
