Terminal Information – Departing

This is only a guideline. Always check your boarding pass for up-to-date terminal information.

From Gatwick: Norwegian and WOW Air flights depart from the South Terminal. The terminal has a great range of places to eat, drink and shop. Dine on a range of world cuisines, browse top high-street labels, or just kick-back in the executive lounge.

From Heathrow: Air New Zealand and United fly from Terminal 2, Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines fly from Terminal 3, and British Airways fly from Terminal 5. Double-check your departure terminal if you're flying with BA, as Terminal 5 is an extra stop on the tube and train. Some trains skip T5 and go to T4 instead, so check the train's schedule too. Heathrow Airport boasts high-end shops, restaurants and amenities in all of its terminals. As you're leaving the EU this is the perfect chance to indulge your tax free discount in a number of designer stores.

Terminal Information – Arriving

British Airways, Air New Zealand, and Norwegian flights land at the Tom Bradley International Terminal. American Airlines usually land at Terminal 4, and United land at Terminals 7 and 8. Every terminal is served by ground transportation. You can take the LAX FlyAway bus to Downtown Union Station, Hollywood, Santa Monica, Van Nuys and Westwood. One-way tickets cost $8* (just over £5.50). For local buses you will need to take Shuttle C to the LAX City Bus Centre near parking lot C. Take Shuttle G to the nearest underground station. Car hire companies are based off-site and provide free shuttles.

Practical Information

British citizens need a valid passport to visit LA. If you're visiting for less than 90 days as a tourist, on a business trip or just passing through you will be eligible for the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP). This isn't available to people with a criminal record, people who have visited certain countries since 2011 (Iraq, Iran, Syria and Sudan), have dual nationality with these countries, or people who are planning to work. You will need to fill in an ESTA online 72 hours before you travel. We recommend getting to the airport at least two hours before your flight to LA is due to depart.

What to expect in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is eight hours behind London and the currency is the dollar ($). With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Los Angeles is a much warmer and brighter place than the British capital. Most people in LA drive (hence the smog) and public transport is practically non-existent. Unless you're okay with taking taxis everywhere, we recommend hiring a car at LAX Airport.
