Celeb chefs Gordon Ramsay and Antonio Carluccio both have outposts at Terminal 5, and Fortnum & Mason have a champagne bar. Both terminals have a seafood bar and a Carluccios, as well as a range of high street favourites. In terms of executive lounges, Terminal 5 has an Aspire Lounge with a spa attached and Terminal 4 has a Plaza Premium Lounge (the interior of which was put together by acclaimed designer Kinney Chan). All offer a peaceful place to relax away from the hustle and bustle along with complimentary refreshments.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Schiphol Airport has one massive arrivals area, Schiphol Plaza. This is where you'll find all of the public and private transport options. The bus stops and taxi rank are immediately outside. Taxis are metered, so you should expect to pay a fair amount when going into the city centre. The airport bus is the best option if you're going to Museumplein or Leidseplein. If you're planning a self-drive holiday you'll find all of the car hire desks inside the Plaza: remember to compare car hire at Schiphol Airport first. The airport also has its own train station, located downstairs. It's best to buy your ticket before boarding the train. Tickets can be purchased from the machines in the station concourse.
You need a valid passport to fly to Amsterdam from London. Aim to arrive two hours before scheduled departure.
What to expect in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is one hour ahead of London and the currency is the Euro (€). You don't need to speak Dutch to get by in Amsterdam, as most people in service roles are able to speak English. Prices in Amsterdam are lower than London, although the bars in the red light district often charge more for beer and food. Despite the city's liberal reputation, drugs are illegal in the Netherlands. If you want to indulge, make sure you do so in a coffee shop. If you get caught in possession you could end up in trouble.
