The USA is outside the EU so you can enjoy duty free shopping in World Duty Free, JD Sports, Dixons Travel, Superdrug and Boots. There's also a WHSmith, if you need some in-flight reading. Nobody likes to fly on an empty stomach. Fill up at Burger King, Dexter's or The Cabin. If you just fancy a coffee you can pick one up at Starbucks. Bristol Airport has two executive lounges, both run by Aspire. Both have unlimited Wi-Fi and complimentary snacks and drinks, but the Aspire Plus lounge has a more luxurious offering and is adults only.
Terminal Information – Arriving
Aer Lingus flights arrive at Terminal 5 if you've gone through security pre-clearance during your layover in Ireland, and Terminal 4 if not. KLM flights also land at Terminal 4. The airport's AirTrain makes it easy to travel between terminals, and also connects onto the NYC public transport system. Tickets cost $5* (about £3.30) and you need to pay $1* (about 65p) for the re-usable MetroCard. Buses are available from Terminal 5, and tend to serve local neighbourhoods in Queens and Brooklyn. New York City is massive, so if you're planning on taking the bus make sure you do your research first. Tickets cost $3* (about £2). If you're feeling brave and want to drive around New York City, remember to compare car hire prices at JFK Airport with Skyscanner.
We recommend arriving at the airport two hours before your flight is due to depart. You need a valid passport to travel from Bristol to New York. British Citizens visiting the states for 90 days or less can often do so without applying for a visa. The Visa Waiver Programme applies to most visits, such as holidays and short business trips. If you're planning to work once you reach the USA you will need to apply for a visa, likewise if you have a criminal record or have had your passport extended by an embassy. If in doubt, speak to your nearest US consulate.
