Economy passengers can enjoy 45 minutes of free Wi-Fi in the main departure area. Most of the shops at Athens Airport are located before security. The airport shopping mall features more than 50 shops including high-end designer labels like Marc Jacobs (as well as a few high-street favourites) and souvenir shops. There are a variety of onward transportation options, from private transfers to local buses. The taxi rank is located immediately outside the arrivals area, alongside the bus stop. Buses run from the airport to Heraklion bus station: we recommend checking timetables and routes before you fly. Private shuttles are a popular transfer option: to guarantee a space, make sure you book in advance. Some hotels offer airport transfers for an added fee. Practical Information

You don't need a passport to fly on domestic routes. That said, you may be asked to produce some photographic ID when you check in or reach the boarding gate so we recommend bringing your passport anyway. For domestic flights you should aim to arrive at the airport no later than one hour before scheduled departure.

What to expect in Crete

Crete is slightly more wallet friendly than the Greek capital. Dinner for two is about 25% cheaper in Crete, while you'll save around 50* cents (just under 40p) on every pint of local beer. Crete and Athens have similar climates, although Crete is cooler during the summer months. You can still expect highs of 29°C during July and August, however. The shoulder seasons (mid-May to June and October to September) are the best times to visit. The weather is at its best during spring and autumn, as are hotel prices. Our Crete travel guide features more information on what to expect.
