East Midlands Airport is celebrating after it was awarded Gold at the Green Apple Environment Awards in London last week.
It is the third consecutive year that the airport, which serves Derby, Leicester and Nottingham, has been recognised nationally by the Green Apple Organisation for environmental best practice.
Commenting on the award, Penny Coates, managing director of East Midlands Airport, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded a Green Apple Award for the third consecutive year.
"The Airport’s perimeter trail provides an exhibition platform for local artists, whilst encouraging environmental education for local children."
The airport’s six-mile perimeter trail is surrounded by woodland, wildflower meadow and grassland, with a dedicated art trail encompassing sculptures, picnic benches and newly-installed interpretation boards, which provide information on nearby plants and wildlife.
In September, East Midlands Airport employees took part in its ‘Big Green Week’, which involved a full programme of events focusing on recycling, energy saving and transport initiatives.
