It sounds like obvious advice, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t bother to read up on the history, culture and geography of their destination before they travel.
This is especially true of those who are travelling in a group where they are not the organisers.
Doing a bit of pre-travel reading serves several purposes. Firstly, it obviously makes you more knowledgeable on the background of a place, which tends to give you more enjoyment once you get there.
It will also inform you if there are any important cultural differences which you need to be aware of. And lastly, reading up whets your appetite and helps you to look forward to your travels – creating thirst and anticipation of a trip.
Buying a guide book is a good start (Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Insight and Eyewitness all produce excellent guide books). There are also endless travel websites that offer good information on your destination. One of our favourites is this week’s website of the week: MatadorNetwork – a great place to get inspired and informed.
