1. Cushtie Pillow £9.75

Comfort 5/5

As the name suggests, Cushtie cushions are seriously comfortable. These colourful, squishy micro-bead body pillows can be used to sit on, to support your neck and lower back and can be moulded into several shapes for finding the most comfortable position.

Compactness 1/5

Maybe more suitable for use in the home and not on the go, Cushtie pillows are rather large – not ideal if you have limited luggage space.

Value for money 4/5

Coming in at just under £10, these pillows are pretty good value for money as they are durable and multi-purpose.

Best for

Family road trippers. These are great travel pillows for kids and adults alike, work well squished up against a car seat or window and can be left behind until the return journey home. Setting off on a family holiday? Don't forget the teddy bear (or anything else) with our essential packing tips.

2. Samsonite Inflatable Travel Pillow £16.00

Comfort 3/5

Once inflated, this travel neck pillow offers great support for the back and sides of your neck as well as your upper shoulders, although it is perhaps not made of the most pleasant material.

Compactness 4/5

This it very easy to inflate and even easier to deflate and comes with a travel pillow case so you don’t have to worry about it being damaged in your hand luggage.

Value for money 3/5

Coming in at £16, it is certainly not the cheapest option, but considering it is by far the easiest on the list to use and comes with a protective cover, it is maybe worth the extra few pounds.

Best for

Short haul flyers. Quick to inflate and even easier to stow away when it's time to land, this is an efficient travel pillow for airplanes. We've got more handy tips here for making your budget flight feel like First Class luxury.

Samsonite

3. Travelrest - The Ultimate Inflatable Travel Pillow £32.95

Comfort 4/5

This can be used in several ways and is the only one on the list to support the whole upper body. It can also be attached to your chair and seatbelt so it doesn’t shift out of place.

Compactness 4/5

This is also very easy to blow up and deflate and rolls up for compact storage.

Value for money 2/5

Retailing at a whopping £32.95, this is a serious investment (although we did find it for £19.95 on Amazon). However, if you're looking specifically at travel pillows for back pain, this might be the one for you.

Best for

Long-haul flyers. It's one of the best body pillows for long flights, with complete support – but to be honest, at this price tag you really do have to be a seasoned traveller to get value for your money. Survive long-haul with a smile on your face by reading our top tips for long flights first!

4. Go kids Luxury Travel Pillow £7.95

Comfort 3/5

Soft and squishy, this is the perfect travel pillow for youngsters that will keep their heads supported without causing strain. It is also softer than your average toy!

Compactness 3/5

Although not inflatable this is still small enough to take on flights and can be squished into a ball easily.

Value for money 4/5

Under £10 and will help your child sleep through a long flight – perfect.

Best for

Family holiday makers. An ideal travel pillow for children. Head this way for more tips on travelling with the kids from seasoned travel mums.

Go Kid pillow

5. Departures Micro Bead Travel Neck Pillow £5.95

(Note: this item is no longer available but we did find a similar type of pillow on the Mountain Warehouse website, for £6.99)

Comfort 2/5

Although this is a pretty good shape and fairly discreet, the travel pillow is pretty firm and inflexible.

Compactness 2/5

Not the most comfy, nor the most compact, it is inflexible and pretty bulky and therefore not easily transportable.

Value for money 3/5

Coming in at just over a fiver, it is certainly better than no head support at all.

Best for

Day trippers. Again, perhaps not so suitable for flights or long journeys – but it may be handy to have in the boot for day trips in a packed car. Looking for ideas on family day trips around the UK? Here are 10 of the most interesting and unusual (in our opinion).

Departures

6. Inflatable Novelty Boob Pillow £5.50

Comfort 1/5

Its small shape and hard plastic material are the main reason for its low score. The other reason will be the discomfort you feel from the glares you will receive from female passengers if you use this in public.

Compactness 3/5

It does deflate into a flat shape – perfect for quickly hiding once you realise that buying a boob pillow was a stupid idea.

Value for money 2/5

It is pretty cheap and if you are in need of a boob pillow then this is your best bet, but really – why would you buy a plastic boob pillow?

Best for

7. New Innovations Total Pillow £12.99

Comfort 4/5

This doughnut-shaped pillow is really soft and can be used in five different ways - including as a seat cushion, head rest or back supporter.

Compactness 3/5

It squishes into different shapes and can be easily attached to your case or bag.

Value for money 3/5

This is a pretty cheap all-rounder; it is almost as compact as an inflatable travel pillow but has all the comfort of a micro-bead one.

Best for

Train/bus travel. Its not as compact as some of the other pillows in our test, but its malleability is perfect for long journeys on public transport as it is small enough to carry with you and spot on for combating uncomfortable seats.

(Note: this pillow is currently out of stock in the UK, but available to buy from Amazon US)

8. TRTL Sleepscarf £24.95

Comfort 3/5

This travel pillow (or sleep scarf) wraps around your head, and features a stiff insert which provides great support if you specifically want a pillow for neck pain. The fleece material also keeps you warm during cold flights.

Compactness 4/5

It is incredibly compact and easy to put on and remove, making it a great airline travel pillow.

Value for money 2/5

Despite its pluses it comes in at just under £25, making you think that perhaps you could just use your normal scarf as a rolled up pillow.

Best for

Winter travel or night buses abroad. Whether you are off on a city break or ski trip, this scarf-come-pillow will keep your neck warm and cosy on the way.

9. Motionperformance Essentials Memory Foam Neck Support Cushion £9.99

Comfort 3/5

This incredibly comfy neck cushion is one of the best pillows for neck pain, offering good support by moulding to the shape of your neck.

Compactness 1/5

This is a fairly massive memory foam pillow and due to the material, it's heavier than your average travel pillow.

Value for money 4/5

You might think that the soft material and smart moulding inner foam would have a higher price tag – it’s just a shame it's a little on the big side.

Best for

Car journeys. It's a little to large for light packers to carry on a flight. And for all you road-trippers out there, here are some fantastic routes to inspire your next driving holiday...

memory foam

10.Embrace Sleep Collar Travel Pillow £19.95. Currently unavailable but you can also take a look at the Trtl Pillow which is similar for around £24.95.

Comfort 2/5

Despite having memory foam, a soft material and full support, we did not find the sleep collar very comfortable. It’s only after wearing it for a while that we started to get used to it, as at first it feels a bit constricting.

Compactness 4/5

It is small enough to fit in a bag or can be tied to the outside of it. If you can get past the fact it makes you look like you have broken your neck then this is perfect for travel.

Value for money 2/5

Coming in at £20, you have to question whether it's really worth it.

Best for

Backpackers. People travelling for months on end may eventually get used to this kind of neck support, and it's very small so good for those wanting to travel light (weighs less than 2 ounces). It also attaches easily to your rucksack. Planning a round-the-world trip? Pick up some space-saving packing tips first.

11. Travel Log Inflatable Neck Cushion £4.80

Comfort 3/5

This small, no frills inflatable travel pillow is surprisingly comfortable – not so big as to feel overly bulky and not so small that it has no effect at all.

Compactness 3/5

Its size makes it perfect for busy flights but on the downside it is hard to deflate – making it a bit of a nuisance when commuting.

Value for money 5/5

Compact, easily transportable and soft, it’s not the best on the list but you can’t argue with that price-tag.

Best for

Budget conscious travellers. Happy with a cheap travel pillow that's just for the occasional journey? Then this one is definitely for you!
