Gappers who book flights to Asia, Africa and the Americas have the opportunity to make a "huge difference" to hundreds of people’s lives.
This is according to Real Gap Experience, which said that volunteering positions abroad are suitable for both school leavers and career breakers.
With destinations in Australasia also popular, volunteering options include work in the community, teaching, wildlife-based positions and sports-based initiatives.
"Wildlife enthusiasts can fulfil their dreams of exploring the Australian wilds on projects such as the Australia Wildlife Sanctuary on Kangaroo Island," a Real Gap statement said.
Teaching positions, many of which are available in Thailand, involve volunteers taking part in and leading their own lesions, with games an important part of children’s learning process.
Africa is home to a number of community projects, with the Swaziland Build a Future programme involving the construction of new homes and allowing volunteers to undertake various repair work.
Real Gap Experience recently said that North America is becoming an increasingly popular gap year destination, with Canada leading the way in terms of numbers.
